More about this title

About the Author: Dennis Alexander

Dennis Alexander

Dennis Alexander has shaped piano education through four decades of prolific composition, producing over 400 publications and recordings that have established him as one of the most widely taught educational composers worldwide. His career spans faculty positions at the University of Montana (where he taught piano pedagogy for 24 years and chaired the piano department), Cal State Fullerton, and Cal State Northridge, along with an active private teaching practice. He was trained at the University of Kansas under Richard Reber and has maintained a parallel career as a performing musician, making his New York recital debut at Carnegie Hall and serving as collaborative artist for internationally recognized soloists and chamber ensembles.

Based in Albuquerque, Alexander continues composing extensively for Alfred Music Publishing while remaining active as a clinician and adjudicator. He has been commissioned by numerous state and national organizations, judged international competitions, and conducted master classes at MTNA conventions. His work reflects deep understanding of how students learn music at every level, combining technical instruction with genuine musicality.

Why we love this

Level 5 strikes the sweet spot where students have enough foundational skills to explore genuine musical styles rather than mere exercises. This book introduces Baroque and Classical writing alongside jazz and folk arrangements, exposing students to multiple compositional languages while building confidence in meter and rhythm work that often trips up developing pianists. The focus on sixteenth notes in compound meters gives students rhythm literacy they'll need for years to come.

What to expect

This book opens doors to multiple musical worlds within a single lesson sequence. Students encounter the clarity and counterpoint of Bach and Mozart, the storytelling warmth of folk ballads, the syncopated freedom of jazz, all while discovering new harmonic colors and rhythmic textures. There's a sense of discovery and capability as students realize they can navigate compound meters and unusual chord structures with musicality.

Who it's for

Level 5 piano students ready to engage with real compositional styles and expand their rhythmic vocabulary beyond simple meters. Teachers seeking a cohesive curriculum that balances technique building with genuine musical exploration and maintains student engagement through diverse repertoire.

How to get the most out of it

  • Anchor sixteenth note patterns by feeling the pulse in compound meter (dotted quarter beats in 6/8, dotted eighth beats in 3/8) rather than counting every note. This keeps the line singing and prevents mechanical playing.
  • Approach grace notes as expressive gestures, not afterthoughts. Steal time from the note they precede so they land as ornamental flourishes, not rushed additions.
  • When working with augmented triads, listen carefully to their unusual resonance and resist the urge to reinforce root position harmony with your ears. These chords deserve clarity and space.
  • Use the stylistic pieces (Baroque, Classical, jazz) as windows into different touch and voicing approaches rather than forcing one technique across all selections.

How to use it

Use this as the spine of a full year's private study or group piano instruction at the intermediate level. The mix of styles works well for student recitals where you want to showcase range without overwhelming developing performers. Pieces can also anchor thematic concert programming (Baroque/Classical nights, American roots music showcases) or support music history discussions across your studio.

Skills your students will build

  • Reading sixteenth note patterns in compound meters (3/8 and 6/8)
  • Identifying and performing augmented triads
  • Executing grace notes with proper ornamentation timing
  • Reading expanded key signatures and transposing into additional keys
  • Recognizing and interpreting Baroque and Classical stylistic elements
  • Playing jazz rhythms and syncopated figures with appropriate feel
