About the Author: Dennis Alexander

Dennis Alexander

Dennis Alexander has shaped generations of young pianists through pedagogically sound, musically engaging compositions. Since joining Alfred Music Publishing in 1986, he has published over 400 works for piano students at all levels, earning international recognition as one of the most prolific voices in educational piano literature. His teaching career spanned four decades, including 24 years at the University of Montana where he directed the piano program, followed by faculty positions at Cal State Fullerton and Cal State Northridge. Beyond the studio and classroom, Alexander maintains an active performance schedule as a soloist, accompanist, and chamber musician, bringing real musical artistry to his compositions.

A native of Kansas and University of Kansas graduate, Alexander has conducted master classes at state and national conventions and served as president of the Montana State Music Teachers Association. His work has been commissioned by numerous organizations, and he has toured internationally to perform recitals and lead workshops in Asia, Europe, and across North America. He currently resides in Albuquerque, New Mexico, where he continues composing and clinician work for Alfred Music Publishing.

Why we love this

The Lesson 1B book combines solid foundational instruction with genuinely appealing music that keeps young students engaged. The dual-tempo CD recordings provide both performance models and accessible practice tempos, removing a common barrier for beginning pianists learning on their own. The inclusion of note reading, rhythm reading, sight-reading, and technical work in one attractive, well-paced book means you have everything needed for a complete first-year experience.

What to expect

Fresh and purposeful. The music balances melodic appeal with accessibility, avoiding both the sterile feel of pure drill and the distraction of overly complex arrangements. Each piece builds confidence without overwhelming, creating a sense of steady progress that keeps young learners eager to turn the page.

Who it's for

Beginning piano students (typically ages 5-8) embarking on their first year of formal study. Teachers and parents of students who need clear pacing, attractive repertoire, and reliable recordings to support independent learning.

How to get the most out of it

  • Use the practice-tempo recordings first to build confidence and secure finger patterns, then progress to performance tempo as independence grows.
  • Balance the technical exercises with the musical pieces to maintain motivation; students respond better when technique serves repertoire they enjoy.
  • Pair the Piano Maestro app with the book to extend practice time and give students interactive feedback between lessons.
  • Choose one or two pieces for recital performance once students have mastered the fundamentals, letting musical success build lasting enthusiasm.

How to use it

This is the backbone of a first-year curriculum. Sequence it as your primary text for lessons 1 through approximately 20, allowing the carefully graduated difficulty to establish solid reading and technical habits. Supplement with the Piano Maestro app for home practice accountability and use the dual-tempo recordings in studio lessons to model expression and tempo control.

Skills your students will build

  • Treble clef note reading (lines and spaces)
  • Basic rhythm reading (whole, half, quarter, and eighth notes)
  • Sight-reading confidence and fluency
  • Hand position and basic finger technique
  • Steady tempo and pulse awareness
  • Musical phrasing at an introductory level
