More about this title

About the Author: Dennis Alexander

Dennis Alexander

Dennis Alexander has shaped educational piano pedagogy for decades through his work with Alfred Music Publishing, beginning in 1986. Since then, his more than 400 compositions and recordings have established him as a leading voice in piano education across all levels. He taught piano pedagogy for 24 years at the University of Montana, where he also chaired the piano department, before moving to California to teach at Cal State Fullerton and Cal State Northridge. Alexander earned his own training at the University of Kansas under Richard Reber.

Beyond the studio and classroom, Alexander maintains an active performing career as soloist, accompanist, and chamber musician. He made his New York debut at Carnegie Recital Hall in 1987 and has since collaborated with internationally recognized artists across multiple continents. A former president of the Montana State Music Teachers Association, he remains a sought-after clinician at state and national conventions and has judged competitions and led master classes worldwide. He currently resides in Albuquerque and continues composing and touring extensively.

Why we love this

This lesson book succeeds because it refuses to separate learning from genuine musicality. The carefully chosen repertoire and lyrics engage young pianists from the very first page, making note reading and rhythm feel purposeful rather than mechanical. The dual-tempo recordings (performance and practice pace) give students a clear sonic goal while supporting independent practice at home.

What to expect

Lesson 1A reads like music from the start, not drill work dressed up as melodies. The pieces breathe naturally, with attractive lyrics that anchor young students' attention and make the learning feel intentional and rewarding.

Who it's for

Beginning pianists ages 5 and up will thrive with this book. Teachers introducing students to note reading, rhythm, and sight-reading will find carefully scaffolded material that avoids overwhelming while maintaining genuine musical interest.

How to get the most out of it

  • Reference both tempos on the CD as you progress. Start with the slower practice tempo to lock in fingering and rhythm, then gradually shift to the performance tempo to build fluency without sacrificing accuracy.
  • Use the Piano Maestro app to reinforce reading between lessons. The app transforms these same pieces into interactive exercises, giving students instant feedback on their note recognition and timing.
  • Listen through the full performance tempo recording before assigning a piece. Knowing the intended character and phrasing helps you guide students toward musical expression rather than just mechanical accuracy.
  • Balance technical workouts with the melodic pieces. The rhythmic and note-reading exercises strengthen foundational skills, but the songs with lyrics remind students why they're learning piano in the first place.

How to use it

This book forms the essential foundation for any piano studio working with young beginners. Use it as your primary curriculum text for the first semester, pairing it with the CD recordings and the Piano Maestro app to create a cohesive ecosystem that reinforces learning across practice sessions, lessons, and app-based review.

Skills your students will build

  • Reading notes on treble clef (Grand Staff introduction)
  • Rhythm reading and counting in simple meters
  • Sight-reading foundational melodic patterns
  • Proper hand position and finger technique
  • Coordinating hands and building independence between left and right
  • Tempo awareness through listening and matching recorded performances
