About the Arranger: Carol Tornquist

Carol Tornquist

Carol Tornquist began playing piano by ear as a young child in northwestern Pennsylvania and pursued formal training at the Warren Conservatory of Music. She earned her B.S. in Music Education from SUNY Fredonia and initially worked as a vocal music teacher in upstate New York while also instructing for the international Yamaha Music School.

A visit to her songwriter brother John W. Thompson in Nashville proved pivotal, leading to her first work transcribing piano arrangements. Over several decades, Tornquist has become one of the most prolific arrangers in contemporary Christian music, with more than four hundred published solo piano collections. Her arrangements serve pianists across traditional, blended, and contemporary worship settings, earning recognition for their musicality, playability, and fresh harmonic voice. She has been an Alfred author since 2010.

Why we love this

Tornquist's gift is making these beloved contemporary hymns sound fresh without demanding technical pyrotechnics. Each arrangement uses intelligent voicing and rhythmic detail to honor the song's original character while creating genuinely rewarding music for pianists stepping into the early advanced repertoire.

What to expect

These arrangements honor the sincerity of the original songs while offering pianists room to shape the music themselves. Tornquist's harmonic palette feels contemporary but never showy, with accompaniment patterns that give the melody breathing room rather than overwhelming it.

Who it's for

Early advanced and advanced pianists looking for accessible arrangements of meaningful contemporary Christian repertoire. Church musicians, worship leaders, and intermediate-to-advanced students will find pieces that are musical enough to feel accomplished yet grounded in the melodies they already know.

How to get the most out of it

  • Pay close attention to the harmonic movements in the left hand. Tornquist often colors familiar melodies with unexpected chord substitutions, and letting those voicings breathe will reveal the arrangement's sophistication.
  • Observe all dynamic markings and tempo variations. These ten pieces span different moods, and respecting the score's phrasing will keep each song from sounding generic.
  • Use the provided lyrics as a guide to interpretation. Reading the words while you practice shapes your understanding of where the melody should lean and how accompaniment patterns support the emotional arc.

How to use it

Build a Sunday worship set that rotates between different songs from this collection, or use individual pieces as preludes and postludes throughout the liturgical year. The varied tempos and moods make this book a natural source for chapel services, praise and worship events, or student recitals where pianists want to perform music with spiritual depth.

Skills your students will build

  • Voice leading in contemporary harmonic settings
  • Sustaining lyrical phrasing while managing left-hand accompaniment patterns
  • Reading and interpreting dynamic and tempo markings for expressive interpretation
