Description
This collection of 12 popular songs for the beginning band is correlated to the Belwin 21st Century Band Method, Levels 1 and 2, but it can also be used with any other recognized beginning band method. Each selection is presented in two ways: The solo arrangement is written so that it can be played as a solo, unison (octaves) ensemble, or full unison band with piano accompaniment or CD accompaniment. The snare and bass drummers play a rhythmical accompaniment part. The band arrangement uses the same rhythms and melodic lines included in the solo arrangement, and, in most cases, even the dynamic levels for the melody lines are the same. The piano accompaniment in this arrangement is not essential, as the selections can be performed without it. Titles are: Augie's Great Municipal Band * Linus and Lucy * Eye of the Tiger * All I Want for Christmas Is My Two Front Teeth * Tequila * Fun, Fun, Fun * The Rose * I'm Walkin' * Helena Polka * Sing, Sing, Sing * Star Wars (Main Theme) * Theme from Superman.

About the Arranger: Jack Bullock

Jack Bullock

Jack Bullock brings three decades of professional music experience to his work as a composer, arranger, and educator. He earned degrees in music education at the undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral levels, and performed as a trumpet player with ensembles ranging from the Miami Philharmonic Orchestra to regional show bands and touring dance orchestras. His performance training under renowned trumpeters Harry Glantz, James Ode, and Craig McHenry shaped his understanding of what works for musicians across all levels.

With over 600 published compositions and arrangements to his name, Bullock has become a central figure in beginning band pedagogy. He served as co-author of the Belwin 21st Century Band Method and contributed as an arranger for Alfred Music's Music Expressions curriculum. His teaching career spanned 20 years in school music classrooms, including seven years as assistant band director at Ithaca College's School of Music, where he also chaired the Music Education Department. He has led clinics and workshops across the United States, Canada, and England, and holds membership in ASCAP since 1980.

Why we love this

Bullock's arrangements respect the exact pedagogical sequence of the method book while delivering genuinely appealing repertoire. You get 12 recognizable titles that students actually want to play, presented flexibly so a single book serves solo players, small groups, or full band without requiring multiple purchases. The dual format (solo with percussion parts and full band arrangement) means you can program these across different concert settings throughout the year without duplicating materials.

What to expect

These arrangements capture the joy of playing recognizable music without the technical demands that would slow a beginning player's progress. From the Peanuts nostalgia of "Linus and Lucy" to the rock energy of "Eye of the Tiger" and the seasonal warmth of "All I Want for Christmas Is My Two Front Teeth," each title delivers immediate musical satisfaction. The familiar melodies let students focus on tone production, steady rhythm, and ensemble listening rather than decoding unfamiliar material.

Who it's for

This book serves beginning tenor saxophonists working at Levels 1-2 of the Belwin 21st Century Band Method, though it works equally well alongside any established beginning band method. Whether a student plays primarily as a soloist or within the full band, these arrangements provide accessible melodic material that builds confidence and maintains engagement.

How to get the most out of it

  • When moving between solo and band arrangements, clarify which version your band will perform; the rhythmic and melodic content stays consistent, so rehearsal transitions are smooth.
  • Balance the tenor saxophone melody against accompaniment textures by listening carefully during band arrangements; the piano part supports rather than doubles your line.
  • Use the recorded accompaniment to establish steady tempo while building confidence on new titles, especially with younger students who benefit from hearing the full harmonic context first.
  • Pay close attention to dynamic markings that align between solo and band versions; this consistency helps you understand how your part fits the larger ensemble sound.

How to use it

Integrate these titles across your concert year by selecting 3-4 pieces for fall programming and rotating others into winter and spring concerts. The flexible solo/band format makes these ideal for mixed-ability band classes where some students perform the solo version while others join the full arrangement. Consider pairing a few selections as a "popular music" mini-set on your band concert to show families that beginning musicians can tackle contemporary material alongside traditional band repertoire.

Skills your students will build

  • Reading and performing standard melodic lines consistently between solo and ensemble contexts
  • Balancing individual part with accompaniment textures
  • Steady tempo maintenance with recorded and live accompaniments
  • Coordinating rhythm with percussion parts (snare and bass drum)
  • Interpreting dynamic markings that connect solo and band arrangements
  • Transitioning smoothly between unison ensemble playing and full band textures
