About the Arranger: Donald Moore

Donald Moore

Donald Moore earned his Bachelor of Music in organ performance and Master of Arts in Teaching from Kent State University. He serves as Organist-Choirmaster at Pilgrim United Church of Christ in Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio, where he applies decades of experience in sacred music.

Moore's catalog exceeds 500 published works across Alfred Music, Hal Leonard, Heritage Music Press, and other major publishers. His compositions span sacred, secular, and educational choral repertoire alongside organ and piano works. Recognized as one of 400 elite composers in American choral history by the American Choral Directors Association, Moore has won the ASCAP Composers Standard Award seventeen times and regularly appears at state, regional, and national festivals.

Why we love this

Moore's treatment of this spiritual captures what makes the genre compelling: spiritual depth without oversimplifying the harmonic language. The recorded accompaniment gives your choir immediate support while the optional instrumental parts allow you to expand beyond voices alone. This is the kind of arrangement that works equally well in a church service, a concert setting, or a festival program.

What to expect

Spirituals carry both conviction and comfort, and this arrangement honors that duality. The harmonic language feels grounded and authentic while remaining warm and inviting, creating space for singers to connect emotionally with the material.

Who it's for

This arrangement serves choirs building their sacred repertoire, whether for church music programs, concert programming, or festival selections. It works for intermediate to advanced high school and college choirs as well as community and church ensembles seeking accessible yet musically satisfying spiritual arrangements.

How to get the most out of it

  • Balance the narrative arc across phrases. Spirituals live in their storytelling, so shape dynamics and phrasing to let the text breathe rather than treating it as technical exercise.
  • Lean into the recorded accompaniment during rehearsals to lock the harmonic framework, but gradually reduce reliance on it as your choir internalizes the progression.
  • If using instrumental parts, rehearse with them early enough that the ensemble hears how they complement rather than double the vocal lines.

How to use it

Pair this with other Moore arrangements or complementary spirituals for a thematic concert section that reflects cultural and musical significance. Its accessibility makes it ideal for spring or fall programming when you need repertoire that performs well without requiring months of rehearsal time.

Skills your students will build

  • Phrasing spirituals with attention to text and narrative
  • Singing in close harmony without losing individual line clarity
  • Responding to recorded accompaniment while maintaining musical independence
  • Blending vocal ranges when parts cross or interweave
