About the Composer: Adrian B. Sims

Adrian B. Sims was born in Seattle in 2000 and developed his compositional voice while studying at the University of Maryland, where he pursues a dual degree in Music Education and Composition. His work has earned recognition at The Midwest Band and Orchestra Clinic, landed on the Bandworld Top 100 List, and won multiple composition competitions including the Maryland Music Educators Association Young Composers Project and the Make Music Young Composers Contest. As both a trombonist and conductor, Sims has performed in orchestras, jazz ensembles, and concert bands across Maryland and studied with Matthew Guilford, solo bass trombonist with the National Symphony Orchestra.

Sims credits his musical growth to mentorship from his high school band directors Christopher Gnagey and Cindy Stevenson, as well as guidance from Dr. Robert Gibson and Brian Balmages at the University of Maryland. His compositions reflect a composer who understands ensemble writing from the inside, having rehearsed and conducted his own works in school performances throughout the state.
