About the Composer: Mark Lortz

Mark Lortz holds the position of Director of Music at Stevenson University, where he shapes the institutional music program and conducts the university's bands. His work spans composition, arrangement, and performance; he serves as music editor for RWS Music Company and contributes brass arrangements to the Reading Buccaneers Drum and Bugle Corps, a multi-world champion ensemble. His compositions have premiered internationally and appeared at prestigious venues including The Midwest Clinic, the Bands of America National Percussion Festival, and the College Band Directors National Association. ASCAP has recognized his output with annual composition awards, and his music has been featured in Bandworld's Top 100 and J.W. Pepper's Editor's Choice lists.

Dr. Lortz brings extensive conducting and adjudicating experience across Europe and the United States, working with honor bands, orchestras, and community ensembles. He has arranged, rehearsed, and conducted the U.S. Army Field Band, the Jazz Ambassadors, and the U.S. Naval Academy Drum and Bugle Corps. His performance resume includes work as Associate Music Director and Percussionist for Phantom of the Opera and engagements with Dallas Brass and major orchestras. The Maryland Music Educators' Association recognized him as an Outstanding Educator in 2024. He earned his Ph.D. in Music Education from Temple University and holds degrees in percussion performance, composition, and education from the Peabody Institute of Johns Hopkins University.
