About the Arranger: Victor C. Johnson

Victor C. Johnson brings decades of choral direction experience to his prolific arranging career. Based in Dallas, Texas, he has served as conductor of the Dallas Symphony Children's Chorus Mixed Ensemble since 2022 and previously directed multiple choirs at Fort Worth Academy of Fine Arts, including the Academy Singers and the Singing Girls of Texas. His catalog includes over 500 published choral works, vocal solos, and keyboard collections.
As School Choral Editor for Sing! (the educational division of Choristers Guild), Johnson remains deeply embedded in the work of music education. His professional involvement spans the American Choral Directors Association, the American Guild of Organists, and multiple state and national music organizations, reflecting his commitment to advancing choral music at all levels.
Why we love this
Johnson's arrangement respects the spiritual's roots while giving it genuine contemporary energy. Every voice part gets real musical material to sing (not just background support), and the optional solo opener creates space for a standout vocalist before the full choir locks in with syncopated harmonies. The gospel vocabulary and key change deliver exactly the kind of joyful momentum that translates to audience engagement.
What to expect
This arrangement channels genuine gospel warmth with syncopated rhythms that keep the energy propulsive. The full harmonies create a sense of collective celebration, and the key change lands like a natural peak rather than a trick—a moment when the spiritual seems to expand and lighten all at once.
Who it's for
School choirs and church ensembles looking for material that feels spiritually grounded while sounding contemporary and energized. SATB choirs with decent musicianship will handle the syncopation and harmony vocabulary, and groups without a strong soloist can skip the optional opener and start with full choir.
How to get the most out of it
- Nail the rhythmic swing in the piano part early in rehearsal. Once your accompanist locks the syncopation, the choir's entrances snap into place naturally.
- If you're using the solo, select someone comfortable with freedom and vulnerability in the opening phrase. This isn't a belted moment; it's intimate before the joy expands.
- The key change should feel like a genuine lift, not a jolt. Work the transition passage so voices land solidly on the new tonal center with bright, forward sound.
- Let the gospel harmonies breathe. Full, rich voicing in the climactic sections reads far better than pushing volume; the harmonies themselves create the power.
How to use it
Program this as a centerpiece for a concert themed around peace, community, or freedom. It pairs naturally with other spirituals or gospel-influenced pieces and also stands beautifully alongside contemporary choral works that draw from similar roots. The recorded accompaniment option makes it accessible for spring festivals or ecumenical service music as well.
