About the Composer: Mary Donnelly

Mary Donnelly

Mary Donnelly grew up in Reno, Nevada, and earned a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Nevada, Reno, with dual majors in English and French. While still an undergraduate, she organized two children's choruses, an experience that inspired her to pursue formal music teacher certification. She went on to earn a Master's Degree in Education from Lesley College in Cambridge, Massachusetts, where her studies centered on integrating the arts across the curriculum.

Donnelly spent thirty years teaching general music and choir in the Washoe County School District, retiring as an accomplished educator and active member of ACDA, NEA, and ASCAP. In 1985, she began collaborating with George L. O. Strid while team-teaching a sixth-grade general music class; their principal's request to write a musical for Reading Week launched a prolific partnership. Together, they have created over two hundred songs and twenty-five musicals, establishing themselves as trusted voices in music education.

Why we love this

Partner songs are a direct teaching tool: they build listening independence, ensemble awareness, and harmonic thinking in ways worksheets cannot. Donnelly and Strid's catalog proves that music written for young singers doesn't sacrifice musical integrity, and having these arrangements as digital downloads means you can access them instantly for lesson planning, rehearsal, or performance prep without waiting for print delivery.

What to expect

Engaging and accessible. Partner songs invite singers into genuine harmonic texture without requiring advanced musicianship, making students feel like they are making real music from their very first rehearsal together.

Who it's for

General music teachers and classroom music specialists working with elementary and middle school students. These partner songs work equally well for mixed-ability groups, small ensemble work, or whole-class singing.

How to get the most out of it

  • Layer the parts gradually during rehearsal. Start with one melody line, add the second only after the first is secure, then combine them so singers hear both parts working together.
  • Record a quick reference track yourself or use this download to play during warm-ups for a few days before formal rehearsal. Passive exposure to the harmonic relationship helps students internalize how the parts fit.
  • Assign voice parts strategically; stronger readers can lead each line, but rotate who sings which part across rehearsals so everyone experiences both melodies.

How to use it

Use these as building blocks for student confidence in part-singing before tackling longer choral works. They also serve as effective ice-breakers in mixed-ability ensembles and work well as performance pieces in informal classroom concerts or assemblies where quick, polished results matter.

Skills your students will build

  • Singing a melodic line independently while listening to another part
  • Understanding how two melodies interact harmonically
  • Following a conductor while maintaining part integrity
  • Building ensemble awareness and balance
