Description
Orchestra Expressions™ provides music educators at all levels with easy-to-use, exciting tools to meet daily classroom challenges and bring new vibrancy and depth to teaching music. The lessons were written based on the National Standards for the Arts in Music -- not retro-fitted to the Standards. The program is music literacy-based and satisfies reading and writing mandates in orchestra class. The pedagogy involves a "four-fingers-down" start for every instrument, separate but simultaneous development of both hands, and beginning the bass in III position to develop early shifting.

The Teacher Curriculum Package for Book Two includes Teacher Edition Books Volumes I-IV, Teacher Resource Guide Book, Teacher Lesson, Masterworks and Performance Selection CDs (1 Masterworks CD, 2 Lesson CDs, 1 Ear Training CD, and 2 Performance Selection CDs), Teacher Support Pack, which includes Student Worksheets #1-#88 (123 total), Teacher Forms and Rubrics (student assessment worksheets, 4 total), Transparencies #1-#49 (57 total), Orchestra Progress Record Book Two, and several orchestra arrangements by Sandra Dackow.

About the Author: Kathleen DeBerry Brungard

Kathleen DeBerry Brungard

Kathleen DeBerry Brungard brings three decades of public school orchestra and strings teaching across Georgia, Arizona, Nevada, Texas, and California to her curriculum work. She has also conducted concert band, jazz band, and orchestras at the secondary level, with numerous elementary and secondary ensembles performing at national, regional, and state music educator conventions throughout her career.

Brungard's expertise extends beyond the classroom into curriculum design and teacher mentorship. She has authored curriculum guides for strings at all instructional levels, led gifted and talented program development, and spent years training and supporting student teachers. Today she continues this work as a clinician, conductor, and adjudicator.

Why we love this

This curriculum package aligns instruction directly to National Standards rather than forcing pedagogy into standards retroactively. The systematic approach to hand development, position work, and music literacy creates a cohesive K-12 progression that actually works in real orchestra classrooms, backed by decades of classroom-tested pedagogy and supported by comprehensive teaching materials that reduce planning time and increase instructional clarity.

What to expect

Working through Orchestra Expressions feels like having a master mentor in the room. Every lesson is purposeful and logically sequenced; every hand position and technical concept builds on what came before. Students experience music reading and writing as integrated skills, not separate exercises, and witness how their technical growth connects directly to the music they perform.

Who it's for

String orchestra teachers across grades 1-12 who want a comprehensive, standards-aligned curriculum with structured lessons, ready-made materials, and assessment tools. This package serves educators new to curriculum design as well as experienced teachers seeking a cohesive progression across multiple grade levels.

How to get the most out of it

  • Establish the four-fingers-down position as your baseline for all students before introducing any new technical demands. Return to this foundation whenever a student struggles, as it stabilizes hand shape across different playing scenarios.
  • Develop both hands simultaneously rather than favoring bow work first. Dedicating equal time to left-hand technique prevents imbalance and accelerates overall musicianship.
  • Begin cello and bass students in third position from the start to build early shifting habits. This departs from traditional pedagogy but eliminates the need to retrain hand position later.
  • Use the included recordings and transparencies in sequence as designed. The Masterworks and Ear Training CDs anchor listening habits that reinforce what students read on the page.

How to use it

Use Book Two as your core curriculum for middle school or intermediate secondary orchestras, supplementing daily lessons with the included worksheets, transparencies, and recordings. The performance selections and arrangements by Sandra Dackow provide concert-ready repertoire at appropriate difficulty levels, allowing you to program music students are actively learning rather than rehearsing separately.

Skills your students will build

  • Music literacy across reading and writing
  • Left and right hand independence and coordination
  • Position shifts on cello and bass
  • Tone production from a unified technical foundation
  • Ensemble intonation and balance
  • Listening discrimination through recorded models
  • Understanding of music notation and composition basics
