More about this title

About the Composer: Andy Beck

Andy Beck

Andy Beck directs choral publications at Alfred Music and has composed and arranged more than 450 choral works, vocal resources, and children's musicals now in active use. His instructional resources, including Sing at First Sight, Foundations in Choral Sight Singing, and Vocalize! 45 Vocal Warm-Ups That Teach Technique, have shaped choral music literacy across countless classrooms. He holds degrees in Music Education from Ithaca College and Northwest Missouri State University.

Beyond his publishing role, Beck maintains an active career as a guest conductor, choreographer, and clinician for honor choirs and all-state groups throughout the country. His performances reach audiences worldwide; a YouTube search reveals his music sung by choral ensembles on every continent. He is also an accomplished tenor who has performed with the North Carolina Master Chorale Chamber Choir and worked as an Alfred Music studio singer since 1992.

Why we love this

Beck brings a precise sense of comedic timing and accessible vocal writing to this novelty piece. The whimsy is earned through genuine musicality rather than gimmick, making it genuinely fun to rehearse without sacrificing ensemble sound.

What to expect

Playful, delightful, and just silly enough to make audiences smile. The piece dances lightly across the theme with Beck's characteristic attention to vocal line and clarity, creating a warm moment in a holiday program.

Who it's for

Choirs of any age looking to balance their holiday programming with a piece that entertains without compromising musicianship. Works especially well for community choirs, school holiday concerts, and any ensemble ready to delight an audience.

How to get the most out of it

  • Nail the rhythmic specificity in the text setting; the humor lands hardest when the words hit exactly on beat.
  • Use the recorded accompaniment to lock in tempos and ensemble entries during rehearsal, then perform with it to maintain that infectious energy.
  • Have singers commit fully to the text and character; novelty pieces require conviction to avoid sounding self-conscious.

How to use it

Place this after a more serious holiday selection to shift the concert's mood, or use it as a finale when you want your audience to leave smiling. It works beautifully in informal settings like holiday community sing-alongs or pops concerts where personality matters as much as polish.

Skills your students will build

  • Clear text articulation and diction
  • Maintaining ensemble energy and synchronization in a rhythmically driven piece
  • Character and intention in performance
  • Responding to recorded accompaniment cues
