Designed to make the work accessible to a wider range of choirs, this version of Only in Sleep is arranged for soprano solo/small group, choir (SAB) and optional piano accompaniment. More about this title

About the Composer: Eriks Ešenvalds

Eriks Ešenvalds stands among the most performed contemporary choral composers worldwide, with a gift for writing music that reaches listeners across genres and concert halls. His work draws deeply from Latvian musical traditions while engaging with universal themes of introspection, nature, and human connection. Ešenvalds has become a vital voice in 21st-century choral music, with his pieces appearing regularly on festival programs and in church services globally.

Why we love this

Only in Sleep has earned its reputation because it combines emotional depth with musical accessibility. This SAB arrangement opens the piece to choirs that might not have the full SATB resources, while maintaining the contemplative quality that makes Ešenvalds' writing so compelling. The optional piano part gives you flexibility in rehearsal and performance, letting the music breathe with or without accompaniment.

What to expect

Only in Sleep unfolds like a private meditation, with delicate textures and introspective harmonies that create space for reflection. The music hovers between stillness and gentle motion, inviting singers and listeners into a quiet psychological landscape where vulnerability and beauty exist side by side.

Who it's for

This arrangement suits developing and established choirs looking for substantial contemporary repertoire that doesn't require a full four-part texture. It works especially well for smaller ensembles or choirs building toward larger SATB works, since the soprano solo or small group carries significant material while the SAB core remains accessible.

How to get the most out of it

  • Shape the soprano solo passages as intimate moments rather than showpieces; the vulnerability of the text depends on restraint and genuine tone quality over projection.
  • Balance the SAB voicing carefully during the unison or near-unison sections so the choir reads as one entity, not three separate lines competing for space.
  • If you use the optional piano, introduce it gradually in rehearsals so singers develop security with their lines before adding harmonic support.
  • Pay attention to text declamation across all voices; Ešenvalds' phrasing often follows speech rhythms rather than strict metric patterns, so careful attention to lyrics will guide your interpretation.

How to use it

This piece anchors a concert program focused on contemporary sacred or secular choral works, offering a contemplative centerpiece that contrasts well with more energetic repertoire. Position it where you want listeners to settle into focused listening, perhaps pairing it with other works from the Musica Baltica series or other Ešenvalds compositions to create a thematic arc.
