About the Composer: Donald Moore

Donald Moore earned his Bachelor of Music in organ performance and Master of Arts in Teaching from Kent State University. He currently serves as Organist-Choirmaster at Pilgrim United Church of Christ in Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio, and has established himself as a prolific composer and arranger with more than 500 works published across major houses including Alfred Music, Hal Leonard, and Heritage Music Press.
Moore's output spans sacred, secular, educational, and popular choral styles, along with organ and piano works and eight instructional books. His compositions regularly appear at state contests and festivals and have been performed at state, regional, national, and international conventions. He is a seventeen-time recipient of the ASCAP Composers Standard Award and was recognized by the American Choral Directors Association Choral Journal as one of 400 historically significant American choral composers.
Why we love this
Moore nails the madrigal conceit with genuine harmonic language and rhythmic vitality, then undercuts it with the central joke: a piece that captures Renaissance charm in about sixty seconds. The humor lands because the writing is legit, not gimmicky. Your singers will delight in the playful refrains and the satisfying brevity that lets this work perfectly into rehearsals with tight schedules or concert programs that need a moment of levity.
What to expect
Stepping into a madrigal that winks at you. The opening establishes genuine Renaissance harmonic color and choral courtesy, then the clever title and conceit keep things from ever feeling precious or overly earnest. It's warm, inventive, and done before you can catch your breath.
Who it's for
Treble choirs ranging from middle school through adult ensembles will find this accessible and engaging. It works well for singers who are ready for simple four-part writing but prefer material that entertains rather than strains.
How to get the most out of it
- Shape the text naturally across the two verses; Moore's harmonic motion will support clear diction without forcing it.
- Treat the three refrains as small crescendos of energy rather than exact repeats. Each one builds on the last.
- Balance the SSA voicing so the top line doesn't dominate the imitative sections; the beauty comes from all three voices equally present.
How to use it
This belongs on a concert between weightier pieces, offering contrast and a moment of shared laughter with your audience. It also works beautifully as an opener to demonstrate that your ensemble can shift tone and style with confidence. Consider pairing it with other secular madrigals or Renaissance-inspired works for a thematic set.
Skills your students will build
- Reading Renaissance harmonic language and voice leading conventions
- Maintaining independent lines in three-part imitative texture
- Text expression and comedic timing in music
- Awareness of historical choral genres and their characteristics
