More about this title

About the Composer: Jay Althouse

Jay Althouse

Jay Althouse holds degrees in Music Education and Music from Indiana University of Pennsylvania, where he was later recognized as a Distinguished Alumnus. Before establishing himself as a prolific composer, he spent eight years managing rights and licenses for a major educational publisher and served on the Executive Board of the Music Publishers Association of America.

With over 800 choral works currently in print, Althouse's compositions reach choirs worldwide. He holds ASCAP membership and is a regular recipient of their Special Award. Beyond composing, he has co-created children's musicals with Sally K. Albrecht, edited influential vocal collections, and authored classroom resources including The Complete Choral Warm-up Book and Accent on Composers. His collaborative choral work I Hear America Singing was performed by the San Francisco Girls and Boys Choirs at President Obama's 2009 Inauguration.

Why we love this

Althouse writes sacred music with genuine spiritual conviction and accessibility that never sacrifices musical interest. The combination of recorded accompaniment and available instrumental parts gives you flexibility in how you present this to your singers, whether you're building independence from the track or layering in instruments for a full choral sound.

What to expect

The spiritual character comes through in Althouse's careful text setting and harmonic language, creating a contemplative yet direct musical statement. There's an earnestness here that connects singers to the material's deeper purpose without resorting to excessive complexity.

Who it's for

Choirs seeking authentic sacred repertoire that communicates clearly to congregations and concert audiences alike. This works equally well in church services, choral festivals, and educational settings where singers need material that challenges them musically while remaining emotionally genuine.

How to get the most out of it

  • Balance the emotional weight of the text with the melodic line; Althouse's harmonies support the message without overwhelming the message itself.
  • Explore the recorded accompaniment early in rehearsals so your singers can hear how their line sits within the full arrangement.
  • Consider adding the instrumental parts for a performance that gives the piece additional depth and context.

How to use it

Pair this with other sacred works by Althouse or contemporary sacred composers for a thematic concert section. It also serves as a strong closer for services or programs where a moment of reflection and conviction feels right.

Skills your students will build

  • Sacred music interpretation and text-driven phrasing
  • Singing over instrumental accompaniment while maintaining independence
