About the Arranger: Jennifer K. Canfield

Jennifer K. Canfield

Jennifer K. Canfield brings two decades of choral directing experience to her work as a composer and arranger. She has led choirs at the middle school, high school, and college levels, while maintaining an active career as a soprano soloist and collaborative pianist across the Southeast and beyond. Her mentors, Dr. William Powell and Dr. Rosephanye Dunn-Powell, shaped her deep commitment to writing music for treble voices.

Canfield holds a PhD in Choral Music Education from Auburn University and currently serves as Assistant Professor of Music in charge of Choral Music Education at Huntingdon College. Her arrangements and compositions have been performed by state ACDA choirs, university ensembles, and church choirs throughout the region. She is also the Alabama ACDA R&S Chair for Women's Choirs.

Why we love this

Canfield's gift for treble writing shows in how she handles this folk tune: the SSA/SSAA voicing feels natural and singable, never forced. The novelty element keeps the energy bright without relying on gimmicks, making it an excellent choice for building ensemble confidence while genuinely entertaining an audience.

What to expect

Oh, Dear! carries the charm of a well-loved folk melody, playful and unpretentious. The novelty character invites smiles from singers and listeners alike without sacrificing musical integrity or requiring vocal fireworks.

Who it's for

This arrangement suits SSA or SSAA choirs of all ages, from middle school singers building confidence to college and community ensembles looking for accessible, audience-friendly repertoire. It works equally well in rehearsal as a morale builder or on a concert program as a palate cleanser.

How to get the most out of it

  • Keep the texture clear by ensuring soprano voices shine on the melody while altos provide solid harmonic support; balance is more important than volume.
  • The traditional tune benefits from a conversational approach to phrasing rather than a overly formal one; let the choir find natural breathing places that match speech patterns.
  • Work the rhythmic accuracy early in rehearsal so singers can focus on tone and blend during later run-throughs.

How to use it

Place this piece in the middle of a concert program to shift mood and energy, or use it as an opener to establish warmth and approachability with your audience. It pairs well with both sacred and secular repertoire and makes an ideal choice for community outreach events where accessibility matters.

Skills your students will build

  • Singing in parallel and independent harmonic lines within SSA/SSAA texture
  • Maintaining clear diction in a traditional folk idiom
  • Balancing ensemble sound across different voice parts
  • Performing with stylistic understanding of folk and novelty conventions
