Sally K. A perennial recipient of the ASCAP Special Music Award since 1987, she has over 600 choral publications and 75 musicals in print, and has conducted honor choirs at Lincoln Center, Carnegie Hall, and The Kennedy Center.

Albrecht holds degrees from Rollins College (B.A., Music and Theater, 1976), the University of Miami (M.A. in Drama, 1977; M.M. in Accompanying, 1979), and has taught at Oakland University, Jersey City State College, and Meredith College. She is particularly recognized for her work integrating movement into choral performance. She and her husband, composer and arranger Jay Althouse, live in North Carolina. In 2021, she received the Distinguished Alumna Award from both the University of Miami Frost School of Music and Rollins College.

Why we love this

This kit delivers everything you need for a full 30-minute production without the scramble to source scripts, arrangements, and choreography separately. The witty character-driven diary entries give each song a narrative payoff, so students aren't just singing novelty numbers; they're performing a coherent story with humor that lands with middle school audiences. The reproducible format and included instructional videos make staging manageable, even for directors new to choreography.

What to expect

Irreverent and joyful, with the energy of a backstage comedy where the North Pole crew's real personalities spill out through diary confessions. Each song cycles through a different comedic premise (reindeer with rhythm, Mrs. Claus with a shopping addiction, Santa needing rest) so the show feels fresh song to song rather than repetitive, and the mix of narrative and novelty novelty keeps audiences genuinely entertained.

Who it's for

Middle school and upper elementary choirs looking for a complete holiday production package with built-in humor and movement. This works equally well for directors who want to fill a winter concert slot with a full theatrical experience or for those teaching choral performance concepts through production.

How to get the most out of it

  • Study the free choreography videos on alfred.com/northpolediaries before rehearsals begin; they demonstrate exactly how the movement sequences should look and help you teach them efficiently to your choir.
  • Cast the seven speaking roles with confident performers who can deliver the diary entries with clear diction and comedic timing; strong narration makes the transitions into the songs feel purposeful rather than jarring.
  • Treat the ensemble portions as distinct from the soloists; even though the chorus sings all the songs, giving clear visual and spatial separation between speakers and singers keeps the staging clean and the story readable.
  • Build in dedicated rehearsal time for the novelty elements (the hip-hop section, the shopping energy, the vacation vibe) so students understand they're performing character and comedy, not just hitting notes.

How to use it

Program this as your entire winter concert or as the main event in a holiday assembly; the 30-minute runtime and self-contained story make it substantial enough to carry a full program. It also works well as a finale piece that brings the whole school together, since the ensemble portions can accommodate performers of varying vocal confidence and the choreography is accessible rather than technically demanding.

Skills your students will build

  • Rhythmic precision in novelty and contemporary song styles (hip-hop, pop, dance rhythms)
  • Character interpretation and dramatic delivery in choral music
  • Movement integration with singing, including choreographed ensemble pieces
  • Ensemble cohesion while balancing solo featured roles with group parts
  • Sight-reading from a full-length script and choral score
