About the Composer: Sally K. Albrecht

Sally K. Albrecht has shaped American choral music for over three decades, first as Director of School Choral, Vocal, and Elementary Publications at major educational publishers, then as a prolific composer in her own right. Her catalog spans more than 600 choral works alongside 75 full-length musicals and songbooks, earning her annual ASCAP Special Music Awards since 1987. She is particularly recognized for integrating movement and staging into choral repertoire, a practice reflected in her extensive clinician work at prestigious venues including Lincoln Center, Carnegie Hall, and The Kennedy Center.
Albrecht holds degrees from Rollins College (B.A. in Music and Theater, 1976), the University of Miami (M.A. in Drama, 1977, and M.M. in Accompanying, 1979), and has taught in music departments at Oakland University, Jersey City State College, and Meredith College. She served as Chair of the Board of Trustees for the Omicron Delta Kappa National Leadership Honor Society and received their "Pillar of Leadership" award. In 2021, she received the Distinguished Alumna Award from both the University of Miami Frost School of Music and Rollins College, where she serves on the Board of Trustees.
Why we love this
This spiritual opens with a welcoming premise that feels fresh and immediately connects singers to the song's purpose. The writing balances accessibility with musical substance, using homophonic sections for clarity and 2-part textures for interest without sacrificing blend or balance. Its flexibility makes it genuinely useful across concert seasons and occasions, and the optional staging details give directors a ready-made path to bringing movement into rehearsals if they choose.
What to expect
Welcoming and warm, with an immediate sense of invitation. The musical language is straightforward and encouraging, making singers feel secure while the varied textures keep the ear engaged throughout.
Who it's for
This work suits any SATB choir seeking repertoire that programs easily and sounds confident in performance. Directors looking for spirituals with contemporary text and creative voicing will find a piece that engages singers while remaining accessible to mixed choirs of varying experience levels.
How to get the most out of it
- Maintain steady pulse and warm vowel quality through the a cappella texture; any slight rushing will become apparent without instrumental support
- Explore the contrast between homophonic and 2-part sections during rehearsal to help singers hear how the texture shifts, then use dynamic shaping to highlight that variety
- If incorporating movement or staging (resources available separately), establish choreography early so singers can sing and move simultaneously without losing focus on intonation
How to use it
Program this piece as a concert opener to establish an inviting tone, or use it in spring concerts as a standalone selection that requires no special accompaniment or extended rehearsal time. It works equally well in holiday concerts, community showcases, or any program where you want an a cappella selection that sounds polished without demanding extensive preparation.
Skills your students will build
- Sustaining intonation in a cappella SATB textures
- Singing 2-part harmony while maintaining blend with the full choir
- Balancing homophonic and contrapuntal writing in the same piece
- Coordinating singing with staged movement
