About the Arranger: Lisa DeSpain

Lisa DeSpain

Lisa DeSpain brings decades of experience in musical theatre and opera composition to her work as an arranger. A recipient of the 2018 OPERA America Discovery Grant, the 2020 National Endowment of the Arts Challenge America Award, and the 2020 Zepick Modern Opera Commission, she has created original works across multiple genres including That Hell-Bound Train, Staggerwing, and No Ladies In the Lady's Book. Her musical theatre compositions address contemporary themes, notably Like I Care!, written for middle school performers to explore internet culture and peer pressure.

At LaGuardia Community College, where she serves as Professor of Music, DeSpain regularly conducts masterclasses on composing for musical theatre and opera. Her deep understanding of how to craft theatre music that resonates with both performers and audiences directly informs her arrangements.

Why we love this

DeSpain's arrangement honors the kinetic energy and emotional core of Next to Normal while making it singable for high school and adult choirs. The 5-minute medley structure allows you to showcase the show's most distinctive moments without overwhelming rehearsal schedules, and her orchestration choices translate beautifully to SoundPax accompaniment.

What to expect

Electrifying and raw. Next to Normal's music captures teenage anxiety, family conflict, and searching for meaning with pop sensibility and sophisticated harmonies. This medley channels that urgency without losing emotional nuance.

Who it's for

High school, college, and community choirs looking to program modern musical theatre with artistic credibility. This arrangement suits choirs with solid sight-reading skills and comfort with contemporary harmonic language.

How to get the most out of it

  • Study the recorded accompaniment to understand the harmonic language and rhythmic groove; Next to Normal's contemporary pop sensibility requires precision in both.

How to use it

Perfect as a concert centerpiece when you want to move beyond traditional Broadway repertoire. Program it on a set focused on contemporary theatre or as a standalone statement piece that demonstrates your choir's range and artistry.

Skills your students will build

  • navigating contemporary harmonic language (seventh chords, modal mixtures, suspended harmonies)
  • interpreting pop/rock vocal style within choral writing
  • balancing theatrical expression with ensemble blend in a medley format
  • ensemble independence across multiple vocal parts in a fast-paced arrangement
