About the Composer: Michael J Miller

Michael J Miller

Michael J Miller brings real ensemble experience to his composing work. He directed bands at Joe E. Newsome High School in Florida from 2013 to 2018, where his programs consistently earned superior ratings at state assessments and won the Florida Bandmasters Association's Otto Kraushaar award in 2017. The Wolfpack Marching Band under his direction claimed the 2015 Bands of America Regional Grand Championship and performed in the 2016 Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade.

As a published composer and arranger, Miller's works appear with Alfred Music, Carl Fischer, FJH Music, and other publishers. His compositions have been recognized by J.W. Pepper's Editor's Choice and named among Band World's Best 100 New Works for Band. His concert band pieces receive regular commissions, including Cosmic Expedition, commissioned by Phi Beta Mu International Bandmaster's Fraternity.

Why we love this

Miller writes fanfares that actually work in the rehearsal room. The asymmetrical rhythms and layered percussion keep ensemble members engaged without becoming a slog to prepare, and the Grade 3 scoring allows solid technical execution while maintaining real musicality. This is the kind of opener that energizes a concert without demanding obscure instrumentation or months of rehearsal.

What to expect

Immediate and propulsive. The asymmetrical rhythms create a sense of forward momentum that feels contemporary rather than ceremonial, while the percussion color gives the fanfare vibrant texture and personality. It opens with attitude and clarity.

Who it's for

Concert bands at the Grade 3 level looking for a sharp, modern opening statement that showcases percussion depth without requiring a sprawling instrumentation. Directors seeking contest or festival repertoire will find this piece audition-ready with room for ensemble customization in interpretation.

How to get the most out of it

  • Balance the percussion section carefully; the variety of attacks and rhythms can easily overshadow the brass if the timpani, snare, and auxiliary percussion aren't monitored for blend rather than pure volume.
  • Lock the asymmetrical rhythms early in rehearsal by drilling them in isolation, then gradually layering them with the melodic voices so students hear how individual lines interlock.
  • Shape the dynamic arc deliberately; asymmetrical rhythms can sound choppy if every hit receives equal weight, so conductor clarity about which attacks lead forward and which settle back prevents the piece from feeling scattered.

How to use it

Open a concert with this to set an energetic tone from the first moment. It works equally well as a festival piece, where its compact form and clear Grade 3 level fit standard contest time limits and adjudication expectations.

Skills your students will build

  • Reading and executing asymmetrical rhythms across multiple parts simultaneously
  • Balancing and blending diverse percussion colors
  • Ensemble entrances with precision in complex rhythmic contexts
  • Dynamic control and phrasing within short, energetic statements
