About the Composer: Randall Hartsell

Randall Hartsell grew up in North Carolina with a strong work ethic born from necessity. Unable to practice at home initially, he walked to his aunt and uncle's house each day after school to spend an hour at their piano, a routine that built both discipline and deep love for the instrument. His formal training came later than his passion; he didn't study composition until his senior year at East Carolina University, yet by then he was already writing pieces inspired by his English literature studies and accompanying his high school choir.

After college, Hartsell settled into small-town teaching and resumed composing with renewed purpose. A chance meeting with Lynn Freeman Olson in the early 1980s proved pivotal, leading him to approach publishers with his work. His debut collection, Something Special, appeared in 1990 with Alfred Music and launched a prolific career. Today, more than 60 published collections and solos bear his name. Based in Charlotte, North Carolina, Hartsell continues to work as a teacher, clinician, adjudicator, and church musician, bringing the same lyrical sensibility that has defined his compositions to every role he undertakes.
