About the Arranger: Ruth Morris Gray

Ruth Morris Gray

Ruth Morris Gray has directed choirs at Rosemead High School in California since 2004, where she also teaches piano. She holds a Bachelor of Music in Piano Performance and Composition from Biola University and earned her Master of Arts in Music Composition from UC Santa Barbara, supplemented by a California Single Subject Music Credential from Cal State Northridge.

With over 100 published choral compositions to her name, Gray brings deep knowledge of what works in the high school choir room. Beyond her work as a composer and director, she performs regularly and pursues her passions for travel, reading, and cycling.

Why we love this

Ruth Morris Gray's arrangement honors the spiritual tradition while making it singable and dramatically effective for modern choirs. The PianoTrax accompaniment gives you flexibility to rehearse independently while maintaining the authentic character of the spiritual. This is a smart choice for festivals or concerts where you want familiar material that still sounds fresh.

What to expect

The spiritual speaks with quiet conviction, rooted in faith and resilience. Gray's arrangement preserves the genre's spiritual gravity while allowing each voice part to shine with its own character and warmth.

Who it's for

This arrangement is ideal for high school and college choirs competing in contests or festivals, or performing in concert settings where a spiritual adds cultural depth and vocal warmth. Choirs with intermediate to advanced singers will find the SATB writing clear enough to learn efficiently while offering enough artistic challenge to engage them.

How to get the most out of it

  • Balance the parts so the text remains clear throughout. Spirituals thrive on rhythmic precision and lyrical clarity, so listen for diction across all four voices during sectionals.
  • Work the accompaniment and choir together from the start rather than drilling them separately. The piano part drives the rhythmic and harmonic foundation, so singers need to feel how it shapes their entrances and phrase shapes.
  • Shape phrases with breath and intention rather than relying on dynamic markings alone. Spirituals gain power through the singers' connection to the text and its message.

How to use it

Program this alongside other sacred or traditional choral literature to create a thematic concert segment, or use it as a powerful standalone piece that demonstrates your choir's ability to honor cultural traditions with authenticity. The moderate length and familiar spiritual idiom make it an effective transition piece between contrasting works on a larger concert.

Skills your students will build

  • Singing in SATB voicing with independent part security
  • Interpreting spiritual tradition through historically informed phrasing
  • Synchronizing with accompaniment while maintaining vocal independence
