More about this title

About the Composer: Martha Mier

Martha Mier

Martha Mier has established herself as one of the most prolific voices in educational piano publishing since joining Alfred Music in 1989. Her compositions span multiple series and more than 200 publications, all grounded in her decades of teaching experience and her credentials as a state and nationally certified piano instructor through MTNA, the Florida State Music Teachers Association, and the National Guild of Piano Teachers.

Mier's work has been recognized consistently by the National Federation of Music Clubs, and her pieces appear regularly on Junior Festival bulletins. She has served as a clinician and adjudicator internationally, conducting workshops in Australia and New Zealand as well as at major conferences including the Music Teachers National Association Conference, the National Piano Teachers Institute, and the World Piano Pedagogy Conference. Her background includes years directing her own piano studio in Lake City, Florida, plus active involvement in church music and professional accompaniment.

Why we love this

Mier's gift for capturing the essence of a style in a single piece gives late elementary and early intermediate pianists genuine variety without overwhelming them. Each piece in this collection stands alone musically, so you can assign them across the year or cluster them by mood depending on what your students need to hear. The arrangements balance accessibility with real stylistic character—students play actual jazz idioms, folk textures, and rhythmic vitality rather than simplified approximations.

What to expect

Opening this book feels like stepping into eleven different musical rooms: a festive marketplace, a misty night sky, a jazz club, a folk dance, a temple courtyard. Each piece invites pianists to inhabit a specific mood and texture, from the high-energy urgency of 'Skateboard Boogie' to the calm contemplation of 'Gentle Ocean Waves.' The variety keeps practicing fresh and helps students discover which styles resonate most deeply with them.

Who it's for

Late elementary and early intermediate pianists ready to move beyond single-style repertoire and explore how different musical traditions feel under the fingers. This collection works for students in group classes, private studios, or self-directed learners who benefit from playing across multiple genres within one book.

How to get the most out of it

  • Establish the style's characteristic rhythm first. Before worrying about notes, tap or clap the groove of 'Cool Strut' or the swing feel of 'Crackerjack Jazz' separately so the style becomes physical, not just visual.
  • Listen to recordings of the style your student is learning. Hearing a real rag, a traditional Celtic jig, or jazz trio work will inform phrasing and touch far more than verbal description alone.
  • Pay attention to tempo markings as style markers. The speed at which 'Burmese Temple Bells' moves contributes to its meditative quality; rushing it flattens the effect entirely.
  • Use the left hand to anchor each style's underlying groove. Many of these pieces ask the left hand to establish the rhythmic or harmonic color that makes the style recognizable.

How to use it

Use these pieces to populate recitals with energy and personality. Programming 'Celtic Jig' alongside 'Silver Moonbeams' in the same recital showcases technical range and interpretive maturity. Alternatively, assign them across a season so that each student lesson cycle brings a new style to explore, reinforcing that musical literacy means fluency across many traditions, not mastery of one.

Skills your students will build

  • Recognizing and performing rhythmic patterns characteristic of jazz, ragtime, and folk styles
  • Understanding harmonic color and how left-hand figures establish style and mood
  • Controlling tone and touch to match stylistic context (crisp attack for rags, legato for ballads)
  • Reading and executing syncopated rhythms with confidence
  • Interpreting tempo and dynamic markings as expressive, not arbitrary, choices
