About the Authors
Christine H. Barden is recognized internationally as a leading figure in early childhood music education. She co-authored Alfred's Music for Little Mozarts, a preschool piano method, and currently teaches piano privately in Reno, Nevada, where she instructs numerous award-winning students in piano, composition, and Music for Little Mozarts classes. Her musical foundation includes a degree in piano performance from San Francisco State University, where she studied with Vladimir Brenner, a piano soloist for the NBC Symphony Orchestra.
Barden's career reflects deep engagement with diverse educational approaches and cultures. She spent four years studying, performing, and teaching in Europe and was among the first American teachers to study with Yamaha Music Foundation instructors in Japan. Over 17 years with Yamaha, she held significant positions including Director of Curriculum and National Chief Instructor for the Yamaha Music Education System.
As a sought-after clinician, Barden has conducted workshops for piano teachers at conferences across the United States and internationally in England, Norway, and Singapore. Her published works through Alfred include the Music for Little Mozarts series and piano solo compositions, notably "Etude Toccata," which was selected as a National Federation of Music Clubs Junior Festival piece.

Dr. Gayle Kowalchyk is a piano educator at California State University, Northridge, where she teaches class piano, applied piano, and piano pedagogy. She earned a bachelor's degree in piano performance from Ohio University, a master's degree in piano performance and pedagogy from Northwestern University, and a doctorate in piano pedagogy from Teachers College at Columbia University.
Her career spans decades of academic leadership and curriculum development. At Eastern Illinois University, she coordinated the class piano program, directed the piano preparatory program, and taught graduate level pedagogy courses. She has also held teaching positions at Oklahoma Baptist University and the University of Oklahoma, and spent summers from 1979 to 1982 on the faculty at the National Music Camp in Interlochen, Michigan. Together with her husband, Dr. E. L. Lancaster, she has authored more than 300 educational piano books, among them Alfred's Premier Piano Course and Music for Little Mozarts.
As a sought-after clinician and adjudicator, Dr. Kowalchyk regularly presents sessions at major national conferences including those sponsored by the Music Teachers National Association, the Music Educators National Conference, the National Group Piano Symposium, and the World Piano Pedagogy Conference. She formerly operated an independent piano studio in Norman, Oklahoma with her husband from 1981 to 1996. Based in the Los Angeles area, she continues her work as a clinician for Alfred Music alongside her teaching responsibilities.

Dr. E. L. Lancaster serves as an adjunct piano faculty member at California State University, Northridge and formerly held the position of Executive Editor, Piano for Alfred Music. He earned degrees from Murray State University and the University of Illinois, culminating in a Ph.D. from Northwestern University.
From 1979 to 1998, Dr. Lancaster was Professor of Music at the University of Oklahoma, Norman, where he fundamentally shaped piano pedagogy education. He established both the master's and doctoral programs in piano pedagogy in 1980 and mentored more than 50 doctoral dissertations in the field. His teaching extended to pre-college students through the Piano Pedagogy Laboratory Program, which integrated group and private instruction. Alongside his academic work, he and his wife, Dr. Gayle Kowalchyk, operated a substantial independent piano studio in Norman from 1981 to 1996.
Dr. Lancaster's contributions to music education earned widespread recognition.
