About the Authors
Christine H. Barden is recognized internationally as a leading expert in early childhood music education. She co-authored Alfred's Music for Little Mozarts preschool piano method and currently teaches piano independently in Reno, Nevada, where she instructs Music for Little Mozarts classes alongside private students at advanced levels.
Barden holds a piano performance degree from San Francisco State University, where she studied under Vladimir Brenner, a piano soloist with the NBC Symphony Orchestra. She spent four years in Europe developing her skills through study, performance, and teaching. Her career includes 17 years as a national staff member with Yamaha, where she held positions as Director of Curriculum and National Chief Instructor for the Yamaha Music Education System. She was among the first American teachers invited to study with Yamaha Music Foundation instructors in Japan.
As a sought-after clinician, Barden has conducted teacher workshops at conferences across the United States and internationally in England, Norway, and Singapore. Her published works through Alfred feature the Music for Little Mozarts series as well as solo piano pieces, including "Etude Toccata," which was selected as a National Federation of Music Clubs Junior Festival piece. Many of her students have earned prizes in piano and composition competitions.

Dr. Gayle Kowalchyk is a piano instructor and pedagogy specialist at California State University, Northridge, where she teaches class piano, individual piano lessons, and piano pedagogy courses. Her educational background includes a bachelor's degree in piano performance from Ohio University, a master's degree in piano performance and pedagogy from Northwestern University, and a doctorate in piano pedagogy from Teachers College at Columbia University.
Throughout her career, Dr. Kowalchyk has held faculty positions at Eastern Illinois University, Oklahoma Baptist University, and the University of Oklahoma. She coordinated class piano programs, directed preparatory piano instruction, and taught graduate level pedagogy courses. During the early 1980s, she spent summers teaching class piano and piano ensemble at the National Music Camp in Interlochen, Michigan.

Dr. E. L. Lancaster served as Executive Editor for Piano at Alfred Music and currently teaches as an adjunct piano faculty member at California State University, Northridge. He earned degrees from Murray State University and the University of Illinois, culminating in a Ph.D. from Northwestern University.
From 1979 to 1998, Dr. Lancaster was Professor of Music at the University of Oklahoma, Norman, where he established the master's and doctoral programs in piano pedagogy and taught piano pedagogy courses. He supervised more than 50 doctoral dissertations in piano pedagogy and directed the Piano Pedagogy Laboratory Program, which integrated group and private instruction for pre-college students. Alongside his academic work, he and his wife, Dr. Gayle Kowalchyk, operated a substantial independent piano studio in Norman from 1981 to 1996.
Dr. Lancaster's leadership in music education extends across multiple professional organizations. He has served as National Chairman of Group Piano and National Chairman of Student Chapters for MTNA, as well as 2020 National Conference Chair. He also held leadership positions with the National Conference on Piano Pedagogy. His teaching excellence has been recognized with numerous awards including the Regents Award for Superior Teaching (1984), the David Ross Boyd Professorship (1991), and the Provost's Outstanding Academic Advising Award (1996). In 2013, Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia named him a Signature Sinfonian in recognition of his exceptional service to the fraternity, and Murray State University honored him as a Distinguished Alumnus in 2014.
