About the Authors
Christine H. Barden stands as a leading voice in early childhood music education and co-author of Alfred's Music for Little Mozarts preschool piano method. Based in Reno, Nevada, she maintains a thriving independent piano studio where she teaches Music for Little Mozarts classes alongside private students who consistently win competitions in piano and composition.
Her musical training includes a piano performance degree from San Francisco State University, where she studied with Vladimir Brenner, principal pianist for the NBC Symphony Orchestra. She spent four years in Europe developing her skills through study, performance, and teaching. Early in her career, Barden became one of the first American teachers to study with Yamaha Music Foundation instructors in Japan, leading to a 17-year tenure as a national staff member with Yamaha Music Education System, including roles as Director of Curriculum and National Chief Instructor.
As a sought-after clinician, Barden has led workshops for piano teachers at conferences across the United States, England, Norway, and Singapore. Her compositions with Alfred Publications include the Music for Little Mozarts series and various piano solos; her piece "Etude Toccata" was selected as a National Federation of Music Clubs Junior Festival choice.

Dr. Gayle Kowalchyk is a faculty member at California State University, Northridge, where she teaches class piano, individual piano, and piano pedagogy. She earned her bachelor's degree in piano performance from Ohio University, a master's degree in piano performance and pedagogy from Northwestern University, and an Ed.D. in piano pedagogy from Teachers College at Columbia University.
Throughout her career, Dr. Kowalchyk has held teaching positions at Eastern Illinois University, Oklahoma Baptist University, and the University of Oklahoma. At Eastern Illinois, she coordinated the class piano program, directed the piano preparatory program, and taught graduate level pedagogy courses. She also spent summers from 1979 to 1982 teaching class piano and ensemble at the National Music Camp in Interlochen, Michigan.
As a clinician and adjudicator, Dr. Kowalchyk regularly presents at major national conferences including those hosted by the Music Teachers National Association, Music Educators National Conference, and the National Conference on Piano Pedagogy. Dr. E. L. Lancaster served as Executive Editor for Piano at Alfred Music and currently teaches piano as adjunct faculty at California State University, Northridge. He earned degrees from Murray State University and the University of Illinois, culminating in a Ph.D. from Northwestern University.
From 1979 to 1998, Dr. Lancaster was Professor of Music at the University of Oklahoma, Norman, where he established the master's and doctoral programs in piano pedagogy in 1980 and mentored more than 50 doctoral students in the field. He directed the group piano program and taught piano pedagogy courses alongside pre-college students through the Piano Pedagogy Laboratory Program. Operating an independent piano studio in Norman with his wife, Dr. Gayle Kowalchyk, from 1981 to 1996 further demonstrated his commitment to comprehensive music education.
Dr. Lancaster's leadership extends throughout the music education community. He has served as National Chairman of Group Piano and National Chairman of Student Chapters for MTNA, as well as 2020 National Conference Chair. His numerous honors include the University of Oklahoma's Regents Award for Superior Teaching (1984), the David Ross Boyd Professorship (1991), and the Provost's Outstanding Academic Advising Award (1996). In 2013, Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia recognized him as a Signature Sinfonian, and Murray State University awarded him the Distinguished Alumnus Award in 2014.
