Lesson Book 1 is pre-reading. Concepts taught are: How to sit at the piano; Correct hand position; High and low; Loud and soft (forte and piano); Keyboard topography; Bar line and measure, Quarter, half, whole notes and rests; and Repeat signs. The first pieces in the book are played on the black keys. Later in the book, C D E for the RH and C B A for the LH (Middle C position) are taught with letter notes (the name of the note is written inside the note head).

About the Authors
Christine H. Barden is recognized worldwide as a leading expert in early childhood music education. She co-authored Alfred's Music for Little Mozarts preschool piano method and currently teaches piano privately in Reno, Nevada, where she directs Music for Little Mozarts classes and instructs students who have won numerous competitions in both piano and composition. A San Francisco State University graduate with a degree in piano performance, she studied under Vladimir Brenner, the renowned piano soloist for the NBC Symphony Orchestra.
Her career reflects extensive international experience and professional leadership. Christine spent four years studying, performing, and teaching throughout Europe, then became one of the first American teachers to study with Yamaha Music Foundation instructors in Japan. She served as a national staff member with Yamaha for 17 years, holding positions including Director of Curriculum and National Chief Instructor for the Yamaha Music Education System.
As a respected clinician, Christine regularly conducts workshops for piano teachers at conferences across the United States and internationally in England, Norway, and Singapore. Her published compositions with Alfred feature both the Music for Little Mozarts course and individual piano solos, including "Etude Toccata," which was selected as a National Federation of Music Club's Junior Festival choice.

Dr. Gayle Kowalchyk is a piano instructor and pedagogy specialist at California State University, Northridge, where she teaches class piano, individual piano, and piano pedagogy courses. She earned her undergraduate degree in piano performance from Ohio University, completed graduate studies in piano performance and pedagogy at Northwestern University, and received her Ed.D. in piano pedagogy from Teachers College at Columbia University.
Throughout her career, Dr. Kowalchyk has held faculty positions at Eastern Illinois University, Oklahoma Baptist University, and the University of Oklahoma. At Eastern Illinois, she oversaw the class piano program, directed the piano preparatory program, and instructed graduate level pedagogy courses. She spent four summers teaching class piano and ensemble at the National Music Camp in Interlochen, Michigan, from 1979 to 1982. Dr. Kowalchyk has collaborated with her husband, Dr. E. L. Lancaster, to create over 300 educational piano publications, among them Alfred's Premier Piano Course and Music for Little Mozarts.
As an active clinician and adjudicator, Dr. Kowalchyk regularly presents at major conferences including those hosted by the Music Teachers National Association, the Music Educators National Conference, and the World Piano Pedagogy Conference. She operated a private piano studio in Norman, Oklahoma, with her husband from 1981 until 1996. Currently based in the Los Angeles area, she continues her work as a clinician for Alfred Music while maintaining her teaching responsibilities.

He earned degrees from Murray State University and the University of Illinois, completing his doctoral studies at Northwestern University.
During his 19 years at the University of Oklahoma (1979–1998), Dr. Lancaster was Professor of Music where he pioneered the masters and doctoral programs in piano pedagogy in 1980 and mentored more than 50 doctoral dissertation writers. He directed the Piano Pedagogy Laboratory Program, which integrated group and private instruction for pre-college students. Along with his wife, Dr. Gayle Kowalchyk, he operated an independent piano studio in Norman, Oklahoma from 1981 to 1996.
Dr. Lancaster's service to the music education community includes roles as National Chairman of Group Piano and National Chairman of Student Chapters for MTNA, as well as 2020 National Conference Chair. He also served on leadership committees for the National Conference on Piano Pedagogy. His teaching excellence has been recognized through multiple awards from the University of Oklahoma, including the Regents Award for Superior Teaching (1984), the David Ross Boyd Professorship (1991), and the Provost's Outstanding Academic Advising Award (1996). In 2013, Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia named him a Signature Sinfonian, and Murray State University presented him with its 2014 Distinguished Alumnus Award.
