About the Authors
Christine H. Barden stands as a leading voice in early childhood music education and is a co-author of Alfred's Music for Little Mozarts preschool piano method. Based in Reno, Nevada, she maintains a private piano teaching practice where she instructs students in piano, composition, and Music for Little Mozarts classes. Many of her students have earned prestigious awards for their performances.
Her musical foundation comes from San Francisco State University, where she earned a degree in piano performance and studied under Vladimir Brenner, a piano soloist with the NBC Symphony Orchestra. Barden also spent four years immersed in European musical study, performance, and teaching. As one of the first American teachers to train with instructors from the Yamaha Music Foundation in Japan, she went on to serve as a national staff member with Yamaha for 17 years, holding positions including Director of Curriculum and National Chief Instructor for the Yamaha Music Education System.
Throughout her career, Barden has been an active clinician, leading workshops for piano teachers at conferences across the United States and internationally in England, Norway, and Singapore. Her compositions published with Alfred feature the Music for Little Mozarts series as well as individual piano solos, including "Etude Toccata," which was selected as a National Federation of Music Clubs Junior Festival piece.

Dr. Gayle Kowalchyk is a piano instructor and pedagogy specialist at California State University, Northridge, where she teaches class piano, individual piano, and piano pedagogy courses. She earned her bachelor's degree in piano performance from Ohio University, completed a master's degree in piano performance and pedagogy at Northwestern University, and received her Ed.D. in piano pedagogy from Teachers College at Columbia University.
Throughout her career, Dr. Kowalchyk has held faculty positions at Eastern Illinois University, Oklahoma Baptist University, and the University of Oklahoma. At Eastern Illinois, she coordinated the class piano program, directed the piano preparatory program, and taught graduate level pedagogy courses. She also taught summer sessions at the National Music Camp in Interlochen, Michigan from 1979 to 1982. With her husband, Dr. E. L. Lancaster, she has co-authored over 300 educational piano publications, including Alfred's Premier Piano Course and Music for Little Mozarts.
As a clinician and adjudicator, Dr. Kowalchyk regularly presents at major conferences including the Music Teachers National Association, the Music Educators National Conference, the National Group Piano Symposium, and the World Piano Pedagogy Conference. From 1981 to 1996, she and her husband operated an independent piano studio in Norman, Oklahoma. Based in the Los Angeles area, she currently serves as a clinician for Alfred Music in addition to her university teaching responsibilities.

Dr. E. L. Lancaster served as Executive Editor for Piano at Alfred Music and currently teaches piano as adjunct faculty at California State University, Northridge. He holds degrees from Murray State University and the University of Illinois, along with a Ph.D. from Northwestern University.
Lancaster spent nearly two decades as Professor of Music at the University of Oklahoma, Norman, where he founded the master's and doctoral programs in piano pedagogy in 1980. Over his tenure from 1979 to 1998, he mentored more than 50 doctoral dissertation students and directed the group piano program. He also taught pre-college students through the Piano Pedagogy Laboratory Program, blending group and private instruction. From 1981 to 1996, he and his wife, Dr. Gayle Kowalchyk, operated an independent piano studio in Norman.
His professional service includes roles as National Chairman of Group Piano and National Chairman of Student Chapters for MTNA, as well as 2020 National Conference Chair. He has held leadership positions with the National Conference on Piano Pedagogy. Lancaster's teaching excellence earned him the Regents Award for Superior Teaching (1984), a David Ross Boyd Professorship (1991), and the Provost's Outstanding Academic Advising Award (1996), among other honors from the University of Oklahoma.
