About the Authors
Christine H. Barden stands as a leading voice in early childhood music education and is the co-author of Alfred's Music for Little Mozarts preschool piano method. Based in Reno, Nevada, she maintains a private piano teaching studio where she works with award-winning students in piano and composition while also teaching Music for Little Mozarts classes to young learners.
Her musical training includes a degree in piano performance from San Francisco State University, where she studied under Vladimir Brenner, a renowned piano soloist with the NBC Symphony Orchestra. She spent four years in Europe studying, performing, and teaching, and was among the first American educators selected to study with Yamaha Music Foundation instructors in Japan. This led to a 17-year tenure as a national staff member with Yamaha, during which she served as Director of Curriculum and National Chief Instructor for the Yamaha Music Education System.
As an in-demand clinician, Christine has led workshops for piano teachers at conferences across the United States, England, Norway, and Singapore. Her compositions and curriculum materials published through Alfred include the Music for Little Mozarts series and several piano solos, notably "Etude Toccata," which was selected as a Junior Festival piece by the National Federation of Music Clubs.

Dr. Gayle Kowalchyk is a piano educator and clinician currently teaching class piano, piano, and piano pedagogy at California State University, Northridge. She earned her B.M. in piano performance from Ohio University (1977), her M.M. in piano performance and pedagogy from Northwestern University (1979), and her Ed.D. in piano pedagogy from Teachers College, Columbia University (1989).
Throughout her career, she has held faculty positions at Eastern Illinois University, Oklahoma Baptist University, and the University of Oklahoma. At Eastern Illinois, she coordinated the class piano program, directed the piano preparatory program, and taught graduate level pedagogy courses. She also spent summers from 1979 to 1982 teaching class piano and piano ensemble at the National Music Camp in Interlochen, Michigan.
A recognized clinician and adjudicator, Dr. Kowalchyk regularly presents at major national conferences including those hosted by the Music Teachers National Association, Music Educators National Conference, National Group Piano Symposium, and the World Piano Pedagogy Conference. Dr. E. L. Lancaster served as Executive Editor for Piano at Alfred Music and currently teaches piano as an adjunct faculty member at California State University, Northridge. He earned degrees from Murray State University and the University of Illinois, culminating in a Ph.D. from Northwestern University.
From 1979 to 1998, Dr. Lancaster was Professor of Music at the University of Oklahoma, Norman, where he shaped the program's direction significantly. He founded the master's and doctoral programs in piano pedagogy in 1980 and mentored more than 50 doctoral students in that specialization. His recognition includes the Regents Award for Superior Teaching (1984), the David Ross Boyd Professorship (1991), and the Provost's Outstanding Academic Advising Award (1996).
Dr. Lancaster's leadership in the music education community spans national and regional organizations. He served as National Chairman of Group Piano and National Chairman of Student Chapters for MTNA, as well as 2020 National Conference Chair. His involvement with the National Conference on Piano Pedagogy included chairing the Administration and Pedagogy Liaison Committee. Additional honors include the Signature Sinfonian Award from Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia (2013) and the Distinguished Alumnus Award from Murray State University (2014). He also operated an independent piano studio in Norman, Oklahoma with his wife, Dr. Gayle Kowalchyk, from 1981 to 1996, and directed a pre-college Piano Pedagogy Laboratory Program that integrated group and private instruction.
