About the Authors
Christine H. Barden is recognized internationally as a leading expert in early childhood music education. She co-authored Alfred's Music for Little Mozarts, a preschool piano method, and currently teaches private piano students in Reno, Nevada. Her students have earned numerous awards in piano and composition, and she also leads Music for Little Mozarts classes for young learners.
Barden holds a piano performance degree from San Francisco State University, where she studied under Vladimir Brenner, a pianist with the NBC Symphony Orchestra. She was among the first American teachers to study with Yamaha Music Foundation instructors in Japan and spent four years in Europe developing her skills through study, performance, and teaching. Her career included 17 years as a national staff member with Yamaha, serving as Director of Curriculum and National Chief Instructor for the Yamaha Music Education System.
As a sought-after clinician, Barden has led workshops for piano teachers at conferences across the United States and internationally in England, Norway, and Singapore. Her published compositions with Alfred span the Music for Little Mozarts curriculum and several piano solos, including "Etude Toccata," which was selected as a Junior Festival piece by the National Federation of Music Clubs.

Dr. Gayle Kowalchyk is a piano instructor and pedagogy specialist at California State University, Northridge, where she teaches class piano and piano pedagogy courses. She earned her Bachelor of Music in piano performance from Ohio University in 1977, her Master of Music in piano performance and pedagogy from Northwestern University in 1979, and her Doctor of Education in piano pedagogy from Teachers College at Columbia University in 1989.
Throughout her career, Dr. Kowalchyk has held faculty positions at Eastern Illinois University, Oklahoma Baptist University, and the University of Oklahoma. She coordinated the class piano program and directed the piano preparatory program at Eastern Illinois University in Charleston. During the summers from 1979 to 1982, she taught class piano and piano ensemble at the National Music Camp in Interlochen, Michigan. With her husband, Dr. E. L. Lancaster, she has co-authored over 300 educational piano publications, including the widely used Alfred's Premier Piano Course and Music for Little Mozarts.
As a clinician and adjudicator, Dr. Kowalchyk regularly presents at major conferences including the Music Teachers National Association, the Music Educators National Conference, the National Group Piano Symposium, and the World Piano Pedagogy Conference. She previously operated an independent piano studio in Norman, Oklahoma with her husband from 1981 to 1996. Currently residing in the Los Angeles area, she continues her work as a clinician for Alfred Music alongside her teaching duties.

Dr. E. L. Lancaster served as Executive Editor for Piano at Alfred Music and currently teaches piano as an adjunct faculty member at California State University, Northridge. He earned degrees from Murray State University, the University of Illinois, and a Ph.D. from Northwestern University.
From 1979 to 1998, Dr. Lancaster was a Professor of Music at the University of Oklahoma, Norman, where he established the master's and doctoral programs in piano pedagogy and directed the group piano program. He mentored more than 50 doctoral students and taught pre-college students through the Piano Pedagogy Laboratory Program, blending group and private instruction. Between 1981 and 1996, he and his wife, Dr. Gayle Kowalchyk, operated a thriving independent piano studio in Norman.
Throughout his career, Dr. Lancaster has held significant leadership roles with MTNA, including National Chairman of Group Piano, National Chairman of Student Chapters, and 2020 National Conference Chair. He has also served in leadership positions with the National Conference on Piano Pedagogy. In 1991, he received the David Ross Boyd Professorship in recognition of his excellence in teaching and student mentorship. Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia named him a Signature Sinfonian in 2013, and Murray State University honored him with the Distinguished Alumnus Award in 2014.
