About the Authors
Christine H. Barden is recognized internationally as a leading expert in early childhood music education. She co-authored Alfred's Music for Little Mozarts preschool piano method and maintains an independent piano teaching practice in Reno, Nevada, where she instructs award-winning students in piano, composition, and Music for Little Mozarts classes. A piano performance graduate from San Francisco State University, she studied under Vladimir Brenner, principal pianist for the NBC Symphony Orchestra, and spent four years living and working throughout Europe.
Barden's career has encompassed significant leadership roles in music education. She was among the first American educators to train with Yamaha Music Foundation instructors in Japan, then served as a national staff member with Yamaha for 17 years in positions including Director of Curriculum and National Chief Instructor for the Yamaha Music Education System. Her publications through Alfred Music span the complete Music for Little Mozarts curriculum as well as individual piano solos, notably "Etude Toccata," which was selected as a National Federation of Music Club Junior Festival piece.
As a sought-after clinician and presenter, Christine regularly conducts workshops for piano teachers at conferences across the United States and internationally, including in England, Norway, and Singapore.

Dr. Gayle Kowalchyk is a piano instructor and pedagogy specialist at California State University, Northridge, where she teaches class piano, applied piano, and piano pedagogy courses. She earned her bachelor's degree in piano performance from Ohio University, a master's degree in piano performance and pedagogy from Northwestern University, and a doctorate in piano pedagogy from Teachers College at Columbia University.
Throughout her career, Dr. Kowalchyk has held faculty positions at Eastern Illinois University, Oklahoma Baptist University, and the University of Oklahoma. At Eastern Illinois, she coordinated the class piano program and directed the piano preparatory program. She also taught summers at the National Music Camp in Interlochen, Michigan from 1979 to 1982. As a respected clinician and adjudicator, she has led sessions at major conferences including the Music Teachers National Association, Music Educators National Conference, National Group Piano Symposium, and World Piano Pedagogy Conference.
In collaboration with her husband, Dr. E. L. Lancaster, Dr. Kowalchyk has authored more than 300 educational piano publications, among them Alfred's Premier Piano Course and Music for Little Mozarts. She maintained a private piano studio in Norman, Oklahoma with her husband from 1981 to 1996. Currently based in the Los Angeles area, she serves as a clinician for Alfred Music while continuing her teaching work.

Dr. E. L. Lancaster served as Executive Editor for Piano at Alfred Music and currently teaches piano as an adjunct faculty member at California State University, Northridge. He holds degrees from Murray State University and the University of Illinois, culminating in a Ph.D. from Northwestern University.
From 1979 to 1998, Dr. Lancaster was Professor of Music at the University of Oklahoma, Norman, where he founded the master's and doctoral programs in piano pedagogy and guided more than 50 doctoral candidates through their dissertations. He also directed the group piano program and supervised the Piano Pedagogy Laboratory Program, which integrated group and private instruction for pre-college students. Between 1981 and 1996, he and his wife, Dr. Gayle Kowalchyk, co-operated a thriving independent piano studio in Norman.
Dr. Lancaster's contributions to music education have earned him widespread recognition. His honors include the Regents Award for Superior Teaching (1984), the Associated Distinguished Lectureship (1987), the Provost's Outstanding Academic Advising Award (1996), the Outstanding Faculty Award in the College of Fine Arts (1996), and the David Ross Boyd Professorship (1991). He was named a Signature Sinfonian by Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia in 2013 and received the 2014 Distinguished Alumnus Award from Murray State University. Within professional organizations, he has served as National Chairman of Group Piano and National Chairman of Student Chapters for MTNA, as well as the 2020 National Conference Chair, while also holding leadership positions in the National Conference on Piano Pedagogy.
