About the Authors
Christine H. Barden stands as an internationally recognized expert in early childhood music education. She co-authored Alfred's Music for Little Mozarts preschool piano method and maintains an independent piano teaching practice in Reno, Nevada, where she works with award-winning students in piano, composition, and Music for Little Mozarts classes. Her musical foundation comes from San Francisco State University, where she earned her degree in piano performance studying under Vladimir Brenner, a pianist who performed with the NBC Symphony Orchestra.
Barden's career reflects extensive international experience and leadership within music education. She was among the first American teachers to study with Yamaha Music Foundation instructors in Japan and went on to serve as a national staff member with Yamaha for 17 years, including roles as Director of Curriculum and National Chief Instructor for the Yamaha Music Education System. She also spent four years living, studying, performing, and teaching in Europe.
As a sought-after clinician, Barden has led workshops for piano teachers at conferences across the United States and internationally in England, Norway, and Singapore. Her published works with Alfred include the Music for Little Mozarts series and piano solos such as "Etude Toccata," which was selected as a National Federation of Music Club's Junior Festival piece.

Dr. Gayle Kowalchyk is a piano instructor and pedagogy specialist at California State University, Northridge, where she teaches class piano, individual piano, and piano pedagogy courses. She earned her undergraduate degree in piano performance from Ohio University, followed by a master's degree in piano performance and pedagogy from Northwestern University, and completed her Ed.D. in piano pedagogy at Teachers College, Columbia University.
Throughout her career, Dr. Kowalchyk has held faculty positions at Eastern Illinois University, Oklahoma Baptist University, and the University of Oklahoma. At Eastern Illinois, she coordinated the class piano program, directed the preparatory piano program, and taught graduate level pedagogy courses. She also spent four summers teaching class piano and piano ensemble at the National Music Camp in Interlochen, Michigan. As a prolific clinician and adjudicator, she has presented at numerous national conferences including the Music Teachers National Association, Music Educators National Conference, National Group Piano Symposium, and World Piano Pedagogy Conference.
In collaboration with her husband, Dr. E. L. Lancaster, Dr. Kowalchyk has authored more than 300 educational piano publications, most notably Alfred's Premier Piano Course and Music for Little Mozarts. From 1981 to 1996, the couple operated an independent piano studio in Norman, Oklahoma, serving students of all ages. Currently based in the Los Angeles area, she continues to work as a clinician for Alfred Music alongside her university teaching responsibilities.

Dr. E. L. Lancaster served as Executive Editor for Piano at Alfred Music and currently teaches piano as adjunct faculty at California State University, Northridge. He earned degrees from Murray State University and the University of Illinois, culminating in a Ph.D. from Northwestern University.
Lancaster spent nearly two decades at the University of Oklahoma, Norman, where he held the rank of Professor of Music from 1979 to 1998. He founded both the master's and doctoral programs in piano pedagogy there in 1980 and mentored more than 50 doctoral students in that discipline. His teaching excellence garnered significant recognition, including the Regents Award for Superior Teaching (1984), the David Ross Boyd Professorship (1991), and the Provost's Outstanding Academic Advising Award (1996), among other honors. In 2013, Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia named him a Signature Sinfonian in recognition of his outstanding contributions to the fraternity.
