More about this title

About the Composer: Russell Robinson

Russell Robinson

Russell Robinson has shaped choral music education through five decades of conducting, composing, and advocacy. His work has taken him to major performance venues including Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, and the Kennedy Center, as well as to festivals and conferences across six continents. He served as Associate Dean of the University of Florida College of the Arts and held national leadership roles with the National Association for Music Education.

With over 500 publications to his name, Robinson balances his scholarly contributions and administrative work with active composition and arrangement. His choral writing reflects a deep understanding of what singers can accomplish at different levels, and his influence on the field was recognized in 2016 when he was inducted into the Florida Music Educators Association Hall of Fame.

Why we love this

Robinson crafted this piece around a message that resonates immediately with singers and audiences alike. The work's accessibility combined with genuine musical substance means your singers will feel proud performing it while your audience leaves with something meaningful to take home.

What to expect

The piece radiates warmth and affirmation without sentimentality. When the instruments and voices align, there's a sense of collective purpose that feels genuine rather than imposed.

Who it's for

Directors seeking an uplifting secular work with a positive message that engages both singers and audiences. This is ideal for mixed choirs at the high school level and above, or treble and lower voice ensembles with comparable musical maturity.

How to get the most out of it

  • Balance the instrumental parts carefully; they should support and enhance the choral lines without overwhelming them, especially in passages where the text carries the primary meaning.
  • Use the recorded accompaniment in rehearsal to lock the ensemble's intonation and rhythmic security before attempting a cappella sections if any exist.
  • Shape the overall arc toward moments of textual emphasis; let the unifying theme of togetherness guide your choices about where to build and where to pull back.

How to use it

Consider programming this as a closer for concerts celebrating community, school spirit, or musical ensemble identity. It works equally well as an opening number that sets an inclusive tone for the rest of your program.

Skills your students will build

  • Blending voice parts with instrumental lines
  • Sustained singing with consistent vowel formation
  • Text projection and emotional commitment to a message-driven piece
  • Responding to instrumental cues and maintaining ensemble cohesion across mixed timbres
