About the Composer: Russell Robinson

Russell Robinson

Russell Robinson's career spans decades of leadership in music education and composition. As Emeritus Professor of Music Education at the University of Florida, he has conducted at Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, the Kennedy Center, and the White House, in addition to presenting at conferences and festivals across six continents. He served as Associate Dean of the UF College of the Arts and held the National Collegiate Chair for Choral Music with the National Association for Music Education.

Robinson's compositional output reflects his deep understanding of choral pedagogy. With over 500 publications in print, including choral works, arrangements, articles, and instructional materials, he has established himself as a trusted voice in school music. His induction into the Florida Music Educators Association Hall of Fame in 2016 recognized his sustained impact on the profession.

Why we love this

Robinson writes with the realities of mixed-age choirs in mind, and this 2-part setting proves it. The message about music's unifying power gives your concert genuine emotional resonance rather than relying on surface-level charm, and the moderate difficulty means your singers can focus on delivering that meaning without struggling through the mechanics.

What to expect

Straightforward and earnest, this piece captures something genuine about music's social power. The writing sits comfortably in the singers' ranges and avoids unnecessary complexity, letting the message land clearly and warmly.

Who it's for

Middle and secondary choirs at grades 3-5 that want to program something with substance. The 2-part voicing works well for developing choirs or those mixing younger and older singers, and the uplifting theme makes it accessible without being simplistic.

How to get the most out of it

  • Balance the two parts so neither voice overwhelms the other; the accompaniment will support both lines clearly once singers find their secure pitch centers.
  • Shape phrases around the text rather than beat patterns. The message about togetherness should shape your phrasing choices.
  • If using the recorded accompaniment, rehearse with it regularly so singers internalize the harmonic foundation and build confidence in their part independence.

How to use it

Program this as a thematic opener or closer for a concert centered on community, connection, or the role of music in students' lives. It works equally well as a standalone piece or paired with contrasting selections that explore other facets of choral singing.

Skills your students will build

  • Independence singing a secondary part while listening to a different line
  • Singing with clear diction to communicate text meaning
  • Sustaining longer phrases and managing breath support across musical lines
  • Responding to harmonic content when singing with recorded accompaniment
