About the Arranger: Chris Sharp

Chris Sharp

Chris Sharp holds a doctorate in music and has built a career across performance, composition, and education. As a trombonist, he spent eleven years as a full-time performing musician and band leader at Walt Disney World, then transitioned into arranging and orchestration work for Disney parks globally since 1984, contributing music for live shows, recordings, and broadcast productions. His freelance work extends to Universal Studios, Ringling Brothers and Barnum & Bailey Circus, the Boston Pops, and the USAF Airmen of Note.

Sharp's educational credentials span middle school through college teaching, and he currently serves as Director of Bands at Polk State College in Winter Haven, where he also teaches music theory, technology, and arranging. His concert and jazz band compositions and arrangements have earned frequent performances at major venues including the Midwest Clinic, and he has received multiple ASCAPlus awards. He has also worked extensively as a clinician, guest conductor, and adjudicator for organizations including Bands of America and Drum Corps International.

Why we love this

This arrangement taps into Sharp's extensive experience with high-energy entertainment and crowd engagement. The combination of recognizable patriotic melodies set against a rock groove gives developing bands an arrangement with real personality, and the Grade 1.5 scoring ensures accessibility without sacrificing the infectious energy that makes audiences respond. You'll find the rock foundation and clever orchestration keep ensemble members invested while maintaining technical clarity at this level.

What to expect

Mount Rockmore channels the swagger of a classic rock anthem while winking at American patriotic tradition. The arrangement crackles with energy and irreverence, taking music your audience already knows and reimagining it through an electric lens that feels modern and entertaining without losing respect for the source material.

Who it's for

This conductor score is designed for middle and high school concert bands at early intermediate level who want a crowd-pleasing closer with genuine musical substance. The Grade 1.5 scoring makes it accessible for developing ensembles while the rock-Americana fusion appeals to both traditional concert audiences and younger listeners.

How to get the most out of it

  • Lock the rock groove with your rhythm section from the start; the steady pulse underneath the patriotic themes is what drives the audience energy.
  • Balance the melodic lines carefully so the familiar tunes (Stars and Stripes Forever and America) cut through the ensemble without the band overwhelming them.
  • Bring out the hints of other patriotic tunes as they appear; they're brief moments that reward attentive listeners and reward your players' attention to detail.
  • Keep the tempo consistent and deliberate; this arrangement relies on rhythmic confidence rather than rushing, which lets the novelty elements land cleanly.

How to use it

Program this as a high-energy concert closer that works equally well for spring pops concerts, patriotic programs, or end-of-year celebrations where you want the audience on their feet. The novelty appeal and rock foundation make it an ideal anchor piece when programming alongside more traditional concert band literature, offering contrast and personality while keeping technical demands reasonable for developing ensembles.

Skills your students will build

  • Maintaining steady rock rhythms across varied instrumental combinations
  • Balancing melodic clarity with ensemble texture at moderate tempos
  • Executing rhythmic precision in syncopated passages
  • Responding to stylistic contrasts between melodic sections and rhythmic grooves
