About the Composer: Randall Hartsell

Randall Hartsell

Randall Hartsell grew up in North Carolina with limited access to a piano; he practiced daily at his aunt and uncle's house until his parents purchased one after his first year of lessons. His early composing drew inspiration from literature studied in English class and led to accompaniment work for his high school choir, but formal composition training came later during his senior year at East Carolina University.

After college, Hartsell returned to teaching and composing in a small town. A pivotal meeting with Lynn Freeman Olson in the early 1980s encouraged him to submit work to publishers, resulting in his first Alfred publication, the three-book series Something Special (1990). Since then, more than 60 collections and solos have been published. He currently resides in Charlotte, where he maintains an active schedule as a teacher, composer, accompanist, clinician, adjudicator, and church musician.
