About the Composer: Beatrice A. Miller

Beatrice A. Miller

Beatrice A. Miller grew up in Detroit, Michigan, in a musical household where her father, a Lutheran pastor and skilled musician, shaped the family's life around hymn singing and choral tradition. Her earliest musical memories are woven into church music, an influence that has remained central to her compositional voice throughout her career.

Miller earned her Master's degree in music composition from Northwestern University and spent decades teaching piano, directing choirs, and serving as a church organist in Corvallis, Oregon. After retiring from teaching in 1979, she devoted herself fully to composition, beginning publication in 1987. Her contributions to music education earned her recognition as Composer of the Year from the Oregon Music Teacher's Association in 1997.

Why we love this

Miller writes with a clear sense of what intermediate pianists can accomplish when given material that breathes. The steady rhythmic foundation in Part II allows the pianist at Piano I to shape a genuine melody, while the repetitive accompaniment pattern gives both players something anchoring to hold onto. Festivals and recitals alike benefit from pieces that sound composed and intentional rather than fragmentary.

What to expect

An unhurried evening walk under starlight, with a gentle rocking motion that never feels rushed. The F major tonality and easy going tempo create warmth and accessibility, while the interplay between the two pianos suggests quiet companionship rather than dramatic confrontation.

Who it's for

Intermediate pianists ready to explore ensemble playing with a partner. This duet works equally well for two students at similar levels or for a teacher-student pairing where the teacher takes Part II, allowing the student to focus on melodic shaping.

How to get the most out of it

  • Establish the tempo with Piano II first; the rhythmic pattern in the accompaniment part is the heartbeat of the piece, so lock it in before adding the melody line.
  • Balance the parts by thinking of Piano II as supportive rather than background. The pattern needs clarity and consistency, but it should never overpower the lyrical content above it.
  • Use the three-page length to your advantage in rehearsal. Break the piece into digestible sections (beginning, middle, conclusion) and polish each before playing through the whole work.
  • Pay attention to phrase breathing. Even though the accompaniment pattern is repetitive, the melody line has natural contours; let those shape where you soften or lean slightly.

How to use it

Program this as a bridge between more soloistic moments in a recital; its chamber-like intimacy works beautifully alongside solo repertoire from the same students. It also serves as an excellent festival selection, fitting the 2024-2028 Federation Festivals calendar.

Skills your students will build

  • Listening and responding to a partner's part in real time
  • Maintaining a steady rhythmic pattern while accommodating rubato in another voice
  • Balancing melody and accompaniment across two instruments
  • Reading and coordinating parts that enter or shift at different moments
  • Playing within the harmonic framework of F major with intermediate voicing
