About the Composer: Melody Bober

Melody Bober

Melody Bober composes piano music with a specific mission: creating pieces that help students develop technique while genuinely enjoying what they play. Her teaching background spans two decades in public school settings, university instruction, and private studio work, giving her an acute understanding of what intermediate pianists need to encounter and master.

Bober holds a bachelor's degree in music education from the University of Illinois at Champaign-Urbana and earned her Master of Arts in piano performance from Minnesota State University, Moorhead. She has studied with accomplished teachers including Joel Shapiro and Andrew Froelich for piano, Mary Hoffman for music education, and Tony Caramia for jazz. Beyond composing, Bober maintains an active career as a church pianist, accompanist, and clinician, leading workshops and presenting at conventions for piano teachers throughout North America. She teaches piano in her private studio in Minnesota.

Why we love this

Modem Madness captures the restless energy of technology through music that feels contemporary and fun without sacrificing pedagogical substance. The piece tackles three specific technical challenges—hand crossovers, articulation shifts, and minor tonality—in a context that feels natural and musical rather than like an etude. Students who play this piece emerge with genuinely useful skills and the satisfaction of sounding polished and confident.

What to expect

Sharp, propulsive, and deliberately modern. Modem Madness channels the urgency of digital culture through crisp articulations and restless hand movement, creating the sonic equivalent of a computer whirring to life.

Who it's for

Intermediate pianists ready to navigate hand independence and quick stylistic shifts. This piece works equally well for students who need a technically engaging teaching tool or for those looking for contemporary repertoire that sounds engaging in recital.

How to get the most out of it

  • Map out all hand crossovers in advance. Mark which hand plays on top in each passage so the crossing motions feel deliberate rather than accidental.
  • Differentiate your articulations precisely. The contrast between crisp and flowing passages is what gives this piece its drive; sloppy transitions flatten the energy.
  • Lean into the minor key without making the piece sound minor or sad. The energetic tempo and syncopated rhythms lift the harmonic color into something modern and bright.

How to use it

Program this as a lively mid-recital moment when you need energy and contrast. Its contemporary character sits beautifully between classical repertoire and gives the program a current, relatable edge.

Skills your students will build

  • Hand crossovers with rhythmic accuracy
  • Rapid articulation changes (staccato to legato and vice versa)
  • Minor scale and chord recognition and execution
  • Dynamic control in syncopated rhythmic patterns
