About the Composer: Shirl Jae Atwell

Shirl Jae Atwell studied composition at the University of Louisville (Master's degree) and completed four years of advanced compositional work at the University of South Carolina. Her output spans opera, ballet, and orchestral music, with major premieres including her first opera Sagegrass (New York City debut), Esta Hargis at Emporia State University, and the ballet Lucy by the Louisville Ballet, which was later adapted into a televised production that won an Emmy Award for Arts & Culture in 2000.

Atwell has received significant recognition from the composition community, winning the 1984 Clifford Shaw Memorial Award for Kentucky Composers, the 1996 National School Orchestra Association composition contest, and the 1997 Texas Orchestra Directors Association contest. Her string orchestra works have been performed by middle school and high school ensembles across the country, and six of her scores were selected for the permanent collection of the Paris Bibliothèque Internationale de Musique Contemporaine.
