Brian Balmages has built a reputation as a composer and conductor equally comfortable in orchestral, band, and chamber settings. His works have traveled from elementary school stages to Carnegie Hall, the Kennedy Center, and the Sydney Opera House, earning him the A. Austin Harding Award and a 2020 NBA William D. Revelli Composition Contest win for Love and Light. He holds membership in the American Bandmasters Association and was honored with the inaugural James Madison University Distinguished Alumni Award.

Beyond the page, Balmages remains active in the conducting world, leading all-state ensembles, university groups, and professional orchestras across continents.
