More about this title

About the Composer: June C. Montgomery

June C. Montgomery

June C. Montgomery earned her degree from Florida State University and has spent more than two decades teaching private piano students. Her work in elementary music education earned her recognition as an Outstanding Elementary Teacher of America and membership in Delta Kappa Gamma.

Montgomery has written extensively for Alfred Publishing, including the FUNdamental Musicianship Skills series, the Piano Camp series, and contributions to Alfred's Basic Piano Library. She collaborated with Maurice Hinson on the Meet the Great Composers books and with Martha Mier on the Musical Concepts series. Her involvement in music education extends beyond the studio and classroom to clinician roles at district and state conventions, the Glover International Workshop, and the Music Teachers National Association. She serves as a pianist and children's choir director in her church and as carillonneur at the Stephen Foster Memorial.

Why we love this

Montgomery writes with elementary pianists in mind, and this piece demonstrates her gift for creating memorable melodies that feel effortless to perform. The title alone invites imagery, making practice sessions engaging rather than mechanical, which keeps young students motivated through a four-page work.

What to expect

Merry Mountain Stream evokes gentle motion and natural imagery; the music captures the sense of water flowing steadily over rocks, bright and flowing without being stormy or turbulent. The piece has a charming, pastoral quality that keeps the ear engaged across all four pages.

Who it's for

This piece works well for late elementary pianists who are ready to explore longer, more developed works while still playing within their technical range. It appeals to students who respond well to descriptive titles and nature-inspired music, and provides a satisfying recital piece without overwhelming difficulty.

How to get the most out of it

  • Shape the melodic phrases by listening to the contour of the line; resist the urge to play every note at the same dynamic level, even when the piece looks straightforward.
  • Pay attention to any tempo or character markings that Montgomery includes; they guide the interpretation and prevent the piece from feeling monotonous.
  • Practice hands separately until the technical passages are secure, then focus on coordinating the accompaniment pattern with the melody so they feel unified.

How to use it

This piece suits spring or summer recitals where a lighter, descriptive work balances more serious repertoire. It pairs nicely with other character pieces from the late elementary level, offering variety in mood and style while maintaining appropriate technical demands for the grade level.

Skills your students will build

  • Sustaining consistent tempo over an extended four-page work
  • Phrasing and shaping melodic lines with dynamic control
  • Coordinating independent hand patterns (melody and accompaniment)
  • Reading and interpreting expressive markings that enhance musical storytelling
