Why we love this
Althouse threads together Mozart's most recognizable melodies with beloved Christmas carol texts, creating an arrangement that works as both a novelty and a genuine teaching tool. Your singers get to perform genuine Mozart while audiences enjoy the humor and charm of familiar holiday lyrics paired with classical themes. The SoundTrax accompaniment delivers professional orchestration, making this feel like a legitimate concert piece rather than a gimmick.
What to expect
Merry Christmas, Mozart sparkles with wit and charm. The arrangement honors Mozart's elegant melodic sensibility while wrapping it in the warmth and accessibility of Christmas carols, creating something that feels both playful and genuinely musical. Your choir will enjoy the familiar comfort of the holiday texts paired with the delight of recognizing famous classical themes.
Who it's for
This octavo works for choirs that want to program something spirited and educational in their holiday concert. It suits singers at intermediate to advanced levels who can handle the musical sophistication of Mozart's work while maintaining the character expected of a Christmas novelty. Directors looking to sneak some music history into their December concert will find this both entertaining and substantive.
How to get the most out of it
- Balance the text clarity with the melodic lines. Since these are Mozart themes with new Christmas lyrics, singers need to articulate the words while respecting the composer's original phrasing and contour.
- Use the recorded accompaniment to lock ensemble attacks and cutoffs, especially during the orchestrated transitions between carol segments.
- Rehearse each carol section as a distinct musical idea before connecting them; this helps singers understand the arrangement's structure and prevents a rushed or scattered feel.
- Highlight the clever moments where the musical setting enhances the humor. Conductor's choices about tempo flexibility and dynamic contrast will make those moments land with your audience.
How to use it
Open your holiday concert with this piece to set a lighter, entertaining tone before moving into more traditional sacred or seasonal repertoire. It also works beautifully as a closing number if you want to send the audience out smiling. Consider programming it alongside other masterwork arrangements or novelties to showcase your ensemble's range and versatility.
