About the Composer: Catherine Rollin

Catherine Rollin

Catherine Rollin is a composer and pianist whose work bridges the concert hall and the teaching studio. She holds degrees from the University of Michigan and Oakland University School of Performing Arts, and has built an international reputation through masterclasses and workshops presented across North America, Japan, and Taiwan. Her compositions have earned commissions from the Music Teachers National Association, the Michigan Music Teachers Association, and Clavier Companion magazine, with several selections appearing in the National Federation of Music Clubs Festivals Bulletin.

Rollin's contributions to music education and composition have been recognized through significant honors. She has served as a national judge for the MTNA Student Composition Competition and on the panel for the Lynn Freeman Olson Composition Contest. Her ASCAP award-winning series Museum Masterpieces (Books 1-4) received prominent presentation at a 2018 Steinway Society concert, and her commissioned trio for flute, alto saxophone, and piano (Suite Detroit) premiered at the MTNA national conference in 2018.

Why we love this

Rollin's intermediate repertoire strikes a real balance between musicality and accessibility. This piece gives students genuinely memorable material to work with rather than exercises disguised as music, making the practice hours feel purposeful and rewarding.

What to expect

Lyrical and introspective, with an emotional warmth that lives in the title. The piece unfolds naturally, inviting the player into a reflective moment that feels both personal and accessible.

Who it's for

Intermediate pianists ready to move beyond technical studies into expressive playing. This solo works well for students preparing for recitals or competitions who want material that demonstrates musicianship without excessive technical demands.

How to get the most out of it

  • Shape the phrasing through dynamic variation rather than tempo changes; let the melodic contour guide your hands into natural rises and falls.
  • Pay attention to the pedal markings as written; they're integral to the harmonic color Rollin intends, particularly in sustaining resonance across chord changes.
  • Bring out the cantabile quality by thinking of the melody as a singing line, even where accompaniment figures might tempt you to rush.

How to use it

Program this as a standalone recital piece or as part of a student showcase that pairs classical and contemporary repertoire. Its moderate length and intermediate level make it ideal for mid-year or end-of-year recitals where you want substantive music without overwhelming younger players.

Skills your students will build

  • Pedal control and listening for harmonic resonance
  • Lyrical phrasing and legato singing tone at the intermediate level
  • Dynamic shaping within a moderate range
  • Reading and interpreting composer intent through expressive markings
