Why we love this

Scott Price's curated collection prioritizes emotional depth and reflective playing without sacrificing musical rigor. The weight toward Romantic literature gives students direct access to the period's expressive vocabulary while maintaining representation across all eras, making this anthology a genuine introduction to meaningful repertoire rather than a collection of easy arrangements.

What to expect

These works invite you into quiet, introspective spaces. Many selections breathe with the yearning and nuance of the Romantic era, but the variety across periods means you'll encounter different moods: tender miniatures, lyrical song-like passages, and moments of gentle drama all delivered with warmth rather than virtuosic flash.

Who it's for

Students ready to engage with genuine concert literature who respond to music with emotional substance and reflective character. This collection suits pianists who find standard etude books unsatisfying and want to build technique within pieces worth learning for their own sake.

How to get the most out of it

  • Listen to the included recordings with score in hand to hear how Price shapes phrases and voices the chords across different registers; this models interpretive choices without prescribing a single reading.
  • Pay attention to the balance between melody and accompaniment in each piece, adjusting your touch to let the harmonic foundation support without overwhelming the top voice.
  • Approach the sustained passages with attention to pedal clarity; these works reward a thoughtful ear for how harmony resonates and evolves over held bass notes.

How to use it

Use individual selections from this collection for student recitals where emotional maturity matters more than technical display. Several pieces work well as opening or closing numbers in a recital program, creating a contemplative frame for the listener's experience.

Skills your students will build

  • Expressive tone control and dynamic shaping
  • Voicing and balancing multiple melodic lines within the same hand
  • Thoughtful pedal technique and harmonic listening
  • Interpretive decision-making within a repertoire context
  • Sustaining musical phrasing across longer forms
