Gerald Sebesky

Gerald Sebesky holds degrees from the Manhattan School of Music (B.M. and M.M.), Columbia University (M.A.), and Kean University (M.S. in psychology). He has maintained an active career as a composer, conductor, and educator, teaching in public schools and universities while building a national and international reputation as a lecturer and clinician across the US, Canada, and England.

With more than 350 published works spanning concert band, stage band, orchestra, and choral literature, Sebesky has earned recognition including a New Jersey Council of the Arts Fellowship. His work extends beyond education into film; he composed the excerpt music for the 1990 motion picture Waiting for the Light.

Why we love this

Sebesky's approach to this Grade 1 arrangement proves that foundational literature doesn't mean foundational writing. He captures the recognizable melody with fresh harmonic colors and smart orchestration choices that keep beginning players engaged without overwhelming them, all while building genuine swing style vocabulary from the first rehearsal.

What to expect

Light-hearted and bouncy, with a familiar tune transformed through contemporary harmonic color and infectious rhythmic energy. The arrangement balances accessibility with polish, never talking down to young musicians while keeping the mood upbeat and rewarding to perform.

Who it's for

Beginning concert bands ready to explore style beyond straight march tempo. This arrangement works for directors introducing swing vocabulary to players who haven't encountered it before, and for groups seeking accessible repertoire with genuine character rather than generic filler.

How to get the most out of it

  • Establish the swing feel early in rehearsals by having the band listen to the recording or a professional performance first; hearing the rhythmic pocket makes the style visceral rather than abstract.
  • Balance the solo passages so they shine without drowning in the background voices; this teaches beginning soloists how to project with confidence.
  • Use the lighter sections to develop ensemble precision; Grade 1 doesn't mean careless, and the humor in the arrangement rewards tight rhythmic control.

How to use it

Program this early in the concert season to build ensemble confidence and introduce stylistic flexibility before tackling more complex rep. It pairs well with straight concert pieces to show your band's range, and its recognizable melody makes it an audience favorite that doesn't feel simplistic.

Skills your students will build

  • Reading and performing swing style rhythms and phrasing
  • Solo playing confidence in a supportive ensemble context
  • Balancing homophonic textures and foreground-background listening
  • Dynamic control across light and energetic musical passages
