About the Composer: James Bowyer

James Bowyer directs the music education program at Bemidji State University, where he holds the rank of Associate Professor. His textbook Creative Sightsinging has found its way into high school and college classrooms internationally. An accomplished choral composer with works published across multiple houses including Alfred Music, Heritage Music Press, and Lorenz, Bowyer brings both scholarly rigor and practical classroom experience to his writing.

Bowyer's research centers on music literacy and pedagogical approaches rooted in Kodály and Orff traditions. He has contributed articles to Choral Journal, Music Educators Journal, and the GIA publication Teaching Music Through Performance in Choir, and currently serves on the editorial advisory board of Music Educators Journal. His background spans nine years of teaching in public, private, and charter schools across four states, and faculty positions at institutions including Indiana University South Bend, Loyola University Maryland, and the University of Washington, where he earned his Doctor of Musical Arts.
