Description
Masquerade was commissioned by the Hannaford Street Silver Band. This is a brass band whose personnel is composed top freelance musicians in Toronto, Canada. Mr. Coakley wanted to personalize the piece so he created tone rows from the letter notes drawn from the names of the members of each section of the band. These individual rows were "boiled" down to one row, and its derivatives. These four motives served as the thematic, and harmonic material for the composition.

More about this title

About the Composer: Donald Coakley

Donald Coakley is a Canadian composer whose work spans orchestral, chamber, and band music. His compositional approach often incorporates structural systems and personalized musical gestures, as exemplified in his commissions for professional ensembles.

Why we love this

Coakley's process of deriving thematic material from the band members' names themselves creates a rare kind of ownership and investment in the music. The piece rewards careful listening to how its four motives evolve and recombine, giving your ensemble the intellectual satisfaction of tracking a sophisticated compositional argument. At Grade 4, it offers contemporary harmonic language without requiring virtuosic passage work.

What to expect

Masquerade is lean and architecture-focused rather than lush. The piece thinks aloud, developing its limited thematic material with clarity and logic, creating a sense of discovery as patterns repeat, transform, and combine in new ways. There is elegance in its economy.

Who it's for

Concert bands working at Grade 4 who want to program contemporary classical music with genuine compositional substance. Ensembles interested in serial or twelve-tone techniques will find Masquerade an accessible entry point into these ideas through a work that was itself born from a personal commission.

How to get the most out of it

  • Identify the four primary motives early in rehearsal and color-code them in parts so musicians recognize when themes pass between sections. This transforms the piece from a sequence of notes into a transparent conversation.
  • Pay attention to balance when motives migrate from brass to woodwinds or back again. The compositional logic depends on hearing each iteration clearly, even in the middle voices.
  • Use the commissioning context as a rehearsal motivator. Tell your band that Coakley built this music from their section members' actual names. It reframes the piece from abstract exercise to personalized gift.

How to use it

Pair Masquerade with other contemporary band works on a concert centered on how composers build form from small ideas. It also works well as a concert opener, where its intellectual clarity can command full attention before heavier repertoire. The Grade 4 difficulty level fits naturally into a spring concert alongside standard repertoire.

Skills your students will build

  • Recognizing and tracking thematic motives across multiple instruments and sections
  • Hearing serial and twelve-tone compositional techniques in an accessible contemporary work
  • Balancing independent lines when thematic material is distributed throughout the ensemble
  • Reading contemporary notation and harmonic language at Grade 4 level
