About the Arranger: Matt Podd

Matt Podd

Matt Podd brings decades of experience as a pianist, arranger, and orchestrator to his work across jazz, gospel, pop, musical theatre, and choral music. Based in New York City, he has arranged and performed for major artists including Barbra Streisand, Dave Matthews, Reneé Fleming, and Joshua Bell, as well as orchestras such as the Boston Pops, New York Pops, and National Symphony Orchestra. His arrangements have been performed at Carnegie Hall, the Kennedy Center, the White House, and venues across the country and around the world.

Podd holds degrees from the Eastman School of Music and Ithaca College and collaborates frequently with his twin brother Adam on musical projects, including their band Mimi & the Podd Brothers.

Why we love this

Podd's arrangement honors the traditional melody while bringing fresh harmonic and textural choices that feel contemporary without stripping away the spiritual weight of this beloved Chanukah hymn. The recorded accompaniment gives your choir an immediate, professional sound even in smaller programs or when rehearsal time is limited.

What to expect

The piece carries the quiet strength and resilience embedded in the traditional melody, enhanced by Podd's thoughtful harmonic language. It feels celebratory yet reflective, with the recorded accompaniment adding warmth and depth that transforms a simple hymn into a complete choral moment.

Who it's for

Choirs of all levels looking for a Chanukah selection that feels both rooted in tradition and musically engaging. This arrangement works equally well for congregational settings, concert performances, or educational choral programs that want to expand their holiday repertoire beyond Christmas.

How to get the most out of it

  • Balance the melody against the accompaniment by having singers tune into the harmonic foundation; the recorded track will support intonation if singers listen actively rather than simply singing over it.
  • Let the arrangement breathe during sustained passages; resist rushing even when the accompaniment moves underneath.
  • Emphasize text clarity on the opening phrases to anchor the congregation or audience in the familiar words before the arrangement's full character emerges.

How to use it

Pair this with other winter or interfaith holiday selections to create a program that reflects your community's full musical calendar. It works beautifully as a centerpiece for a Chanukah concert or as a meaningful addition to a secular winter celebration that honors multiple traditions.

Skills your students will build

  • Sustaining legato lines through harmonic changes
  • Listening to recorded accompaniments while maintaining independent vocal line
  • Interpreting traditional melody with modern harmonic context
  • Performing sacred music with sensitivity to cultural and spiritual significance
