About the Arranger: Roy Phillippe

Roy Phillippe

Roy Phillippe studied composition, arranging, and orchestration at Kent State University and later with Phil Rizzo, a theorist and director for the Stan Kenton Jazz Orchestra in Residence program. Based in Los Angeles since graduation, Phillippe has spent decades arranging for film, television, and concert settings, with his work performed by ensembles ranging from Count Basie's orchestra to the Everett Symphony and the Young Musician's Foundation Debut Orchestra.

Phillippe's published arrangements span jazz ensemble, orchestra, and concert band repertoire, performed by student and professional musicians worldwide. He served as executive secretary of the American Society of Music Arrangers and Composers and holds affiliations with ASCAP, NARAS, and JEN. His editorial work includes Henry Mancini's "Case History of a Film Score: The Thorn Birds."

Why we love this

Phillippe's touch with pop material shows a real understanding of what makes a concert band arrangement sing. Rather than just orchestrating the hits straight, he builds momentum across the medley structure so each song lands fresh, and the four-song arc ("Mamma Mia," "S.O.S.," "I Have a Dream," "Dancing Queen") creates natural peaks that keep audiences engaged without requiring a sophisticated ensemble.

What to expect

Infectious and celebratory. The ABBA catalog carries an inherent joy that this arrangement honors; expect your band to feel the groove of "Dancing Queen" and audiences to light up the moment the opening of "Mamma Mia" kicks in.

Who it's for

Band directors seeking accessible pop repertoire that audiences will recognize and students will actually want to rehearse. This works for groups at the Grade 3 level who can handle straightforward ensemble balance and basic stylistic control without needing extensive musical maturity.

How to get the most out of it

  • Balance the melody across your section leads rather than doubling it heavily; these ABBA hooks are strong enough to carry without weight, and clarity will let the recognizable themes land.
  • Lean into the rhythmic pocket on "Dancing Queen" to bring out the groove that audiences recognize instantly.
  • Shape each song's transition cleanly so the medley feels intentional rather than patched together.

How to use it

This medley works beautifully as a pops concert opener or closer, where its energy can set or punctuate the mood. It also pairs well with one more substantial classical or contemporary work to create a balanced program that shows range without losing the audience's engagement.

Skills your students will build

  • Executing a consistent style across contrasting song sections
  • Reading cut time and common time signatures within a single piece
  • Balancing melody and harmonic accompaniment at the ensemble level
  • Responding to rhythmic groove and maintaining pocket
  • Executing smooth key changes and transitions between songs
