About the Composer: Lisa Longe

Lisa Longe

Lisa Longe studied music education at the Crane School of Music at SUNY Potsdam, earning both a bachelor's and master's degree, then pursued additional graduate work in Christian Spirituality at Fordham University. For over two decades, she has taught music in Schenectady City Public Schools in Upstate New York, beginning with general music before transitioning to instrumental band, where she has found deep satisfaction in guiding students through their first encounters with their instruments.

Longe's passion for choral music runs equally deep. She regularly accompanies school choirs and believes that children's voices create an unmatched beauty. Her dual commitment to instrumental and vocal music education, combined with her experience mentoring young musicians through their early development, informs her compositional work. She lives in Albany with her family and a menagerie that includes two teenage children, two dogs, a bird, and a gecko.

Why we love this

Longe writes for singers with genuine affection for the choral sound, and this piece carries that warmth throughout. The recorded accompaniment means your choir can prepare independently and still arrive at rehearsal performance-ready, freeing you to focus on blend, interpretation, and the details that transform adequate singing into memorable singing.

What to expect

Little River flows with natural ease, suggesting gentle motion and quiet contentment. The musical language is accessible without sacrificing character, inviting singers into a landscape of light, lyrical writing that feels both contemporary and timeless.

Who it's for

This piece suits middle school, high school, and adult community choirs preparing for concerts and festival competition. It works equally well for singers with solid fundamentals and those still building confidence in their voices.

How to get the most out of it

  • Study the recorded accompaniment before your first rehearsal to internalize the harmonic movement and phrasing; this gives you an immediate reference point when teaching the vocal lines.
  • Balance the voices so the text remains intelligible; secular concert pieces often benefit from clear diction that lets the accompaniment support rather than double the choir.
  • Use the PianoTrax file to have singers mark their breathing points during independent practice, especially helpful for students still developing score reading skills.

How to use it

Pair this with other Longe compositions or similarly lyrical secular pieces for a thematic concert segment focused on nature or reflection. Its moderate length and concert polish make it an ideal closing number for a program or a strong opening that sets an introspective tone.

Skills your students will build

  • Reading and sustaining harmonic lines within a four-part choir texture
  • Responding to and singing with recorded accompaniment
  • Coordinating breath points across a section in longer phrases
  • Shaping dynamic and tonal contour in contemporary secular choral writing
